One of the main ideas that develops throughout the diary is the annexe-related conflicts and what they involve. In 1942 the annexe-related problems are mostly how hard it is for Anne to remain being quiet when someone is downstairs and some related problems. This idea is first mentioned and brought up in the September 29th entry where she states “You can imagine what a trial that was for Miss Quack Quack”. This is also brought up in the October 20th entry when she tells that the Mr.Koophuis and Elli came but they weren’t told so they had to go into an emergency situation where they remained quiet for at least an hour due to the thought of being discovered. The first time infestations happen is when rats are in the attic, this is mentioned twice in the diary, first in the March 10th entry then in the March 25th entry. On March 10th she states “What do you think it was running away?... A swarm of enormous rats!” they then let Moushci sleep up there and the rats go away. Then in the March 25th entry, a warehouse worker knocked down a barrel and the whole secret annexe thought it was a burglar so they hid until they came to their senses and Elli told them what really happened, a good quote from this entry could be “...one’s imagination can play a big part at such critical moments”. Another main conflict was the burglars coming in on July 16th and Anne tells us about them; apparently the burglars stole some money, checkbooks, and coupons for sugar which Anne isn’t happy about. The final conflict involving infestation was in the August 3rd entry. In this entry Anne tells the reader that Mouschi got fleas and now they are all over the secret annexe but Anne tries to stay positive by saying the fleas will help them become more supple again.
