Despite it has not been fully proven, many readers believe that Go Ask Alice was written by an American Therapist and Mormon youth counselor Beatriz Ruby Mathews Sparks. The book has been banned and or challenged on multiple occasions for its constant drug use reference, teen pregnancy, prostitution, sexual activity, and rape (Sparks). According to Wikipedia.com, Sparks was born January 15, 1917 in Goldberg Idaho, but later moved and was raised in Logan, Utah. She began working with teens in 1955 after she attended the University of California Los Angeles and Brigham Young University (Biography). From there she is hooked and she begins to experiment with even harder drugs, which eventually lead her to run away from home to San Francisco with her friend Chris who is also a drug user. While in San Francisco, Alice lives in a putrid apartment with hopes of one day opening a store of her own. Weeks pass and Alice gets tired of living in San Francisco, and moves back in to her house with her parents and her two siblings Tim and Alexandria. Alice stays sober for a while and begins to take care of herself again, when she is hooked on drugs again and leaves to Oregon where she travels all along the west coast. Alice meets a girl by the name of Doris and is shocked when she finds out that Doris is 14 years old prostitute whos been having sex for drugs since she was 12 years old. After finding this out Alice goes back home in hopes of being able to control her life again. Luckily she does but she is also a target to her old drug using friends.
