Seabiscuit, An American Legend, is a book about the racehorse, Seabiscuit, who stole several American’s hearts as he made his journey through the horse racing world. Throughout the book, the bond of trust between the horse, trainer, and jockey grows into a greater appreciation and respect for one another. Red, Seabiscuit’s primary jockey, faced several vigorous trials that take place in the racing-world. Nevertheless he never gave up his dream, which was to ride race horses. Seabiscuit traveled all over the country to compete in races, which can be a ridiculously huge strain especially on animals.
Throughout the last two weeks, I have been reading Patrick Ness’ Monsters of Men and Garth stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain. I had 478 pages left of Monsters of Men and I finished that book. I am currently on page 122 of The Art of Racing in the Rain. Monsters of Men was about the battle between Spackle and the people. There were two groups of people that were also against each other but they decided that they had to join forces because one group did not have food and the other group did not have water because the Spackle destroyed their supply of it.

Introduction Garth Stein, author of the renowned The Art of Racing in the Rain has a capacity to engage readers from the beginning to the end of each novel. One might ask how what his writing is so appealing; numerous people believe that great novels are because of the who the author is as a person. However, the author has to allow the characters to take on their own personalities; the characters are very much different from the author in truly iconic novels. Garth Stein certainly subscribes to this idea, as he is known for his stories that seem authentic and natural, driven by his original characters, rather than characters based off of himself.
Imagine eating little to no food everyday, eliminating as much body fluid as possible to keep your weight unnaturally low, all while having the possibility of dying participating in the sport that you love. Well this was the life of a jockey in the 1920s and 30’s. Their life was nothing short of appealing. The rigorous lifestyle of a jockey was all to make it big and ride the “big horse”. There were many daily sacrifices and dangers that came along with being a jockey.
I always hear people say oh barrel racing it’s so easy all you do is go out there and run around metal barrels. Being a barrel racer is more than getting on a horse and going out into the arena and running around some metal barrels. To be a barrel racer it takes guts, determination, strength, agility, trust and a lot of patience. Barrel racing is all about the bond and trust you have with your horse because without that, you will never have a successful barrel racing career and you can get hurt.
The one extracurricular activity that has become a main priority in my life is my horses and barrel racing. Riding horses has become a stress reliever and a favorite pass time. It has become not only a sport, but a lifestyle. I began riding when I was only three years old. My mother bought me my very first pony and taught me how to ride.
The winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2007, The Race Beat, was a novel written by Gene Roberts and Hank Klibanoff; who were both American journalists and editors. The Race Beat was written based on the time period of the Civil Rights Movement. The centralized idea of this novel was to show how racism was finally brought forth and acknowledged as a whole from the nation. This idea was presented from both televised media and printed media. The way The Race Beat was organized was through a bunch of collected interviews, unpublished articles, notes from secret meetings, and even private correspondences.

The Prodigal Son was written by St. Luke and is recorded in the book of Luke in the Bible. D.H. Lawrence wrote the short story: The Rocking-Horse Winner. Both of these stories are fiction based, and they hold many good lessons to learn from them.

It goes on into the medical perspective explaining that how not all research shows that everyone suffered from the same Black Death diseases that killed many. There were other plagues as well causing people to suffer and die during those times. This source also argues that there some good that came out of the plague specifically seen in the Renaissance age.
