“The Art of Racing in the Rain” is a book written by Garth Stein. In this book, Garth showed his thoughts about different points of view, different representations of peaceful animals, and how life can be compared to racecar driving. “The Art of Racing in the Rain” was written through the eyes of Enzo, a dog. Although Enzo was a dog, he thinks, philosophizes, and learns just like a human. An example would be when Denny left the television on by accident at home, and Enzo became addicted to it, while learning many things, contributing to his education. It also appears that Enzo has the capability to understand the English language that humans speak, but he cannot communicate back. In reality, our perspective on dogs would normally be thought of as just an animal companion that cannot do much, but to provide company. Garth puts some very interesting concepts into our minds. In one scene of the book, a zebra was introduced. It was not peaceful in any manner. In this book, Garth relates life to racecar driving. A quote from Denny: “Drivers are afraid of the rain… Rain amplifies your mistakes, and water on the track can make your car handle unpredictably. When something unpredictable happens you have to react to it; if you’re racing at speed, you’re reacting too late. And so you should be afraid.” Garth is trying to say that life will have unexpected things, and no matter what; you will need to deal with it, and do what is necessary to get through it. Another quote from Denny: “In racing, they say that your car goes where your eyes go. The driver who cannot tear his eyes away from the wall as he spins out of control will meet that wall… Simply another way of saying that which you manifest is before you.” This means that the reality you see in front of you is the result, and only the result of the choices you have
