The Art of Racing in the Rain
Pg. 155 “Yes one more lap. One more lap. Forever, one more lap. I live my life for one more lap. God please give me one more lap.”
I chose this quote to write a response about because of its significance to the story. To Enzo the dog and narrator of the story this is a way of life.Since he loves racing a passion him and his owner share he can relate almost any aspect of life to racing. This quote escalates from a simple request for another lap on the track to a request for another lap in life. You can clearly see how dedicated Enzo is to having one more lap when it turns from asking to begging. In life no matter what you need to try even in the most hopeless of situations. Denny does this by fighting the custody case and the accusations brought against him. You will never know unless you try is another way of saying this quote. If he had just given up when he thought he didn’t have a chance he would have been left without his daughter and as a registered sex offender. How do you expect to win if you don’t give effort and hardwork. As long as you 81give it your all to the very end you can’t be disappointed in yourself. Just like when Eve died she had fought hard just as hard as Denny did to try and get her to go to the doctor. Because of that Eve couldn’t be blamed for giving up and Denny couldn’t be blamed for not trying to help her. Knowing that he did all that he could to protect Eve was an important factor in Denny’s grieving process. Enzo has to do this too since he has hip dysplasia every day became a challenge. He tried as hard as he could to cope with the pain that came with his disease and his old age.When Enzo stopped being able to move and his day was to come upon him he felt peace knowing he tried as hard as he could and just because he didn’t win the race he was not dishonored because at least he tried.
