Did anybody notice the last sentence in “Woman Hollering Creek”? “It was gurgling out of her own throat, a long ribbon of laughter, like water.” Amazing, right?! In the beginning of the book The River Ronnie is depressed Karen died and is blocking out friend's and family and it is preventing her from seeing the truth. In the late 1960's, segregation had just been outlawed in the United States after a strenuous, nearly 15 year long civil rights movement. Still, despite this great achievement, racism and white supremacy still existed in the South. These tensions are seen throughout Pat Conroy's memoir The Water is Wide, in which he shares his experience as a teacher on the extremely isolated Yamacraw Island. Here, a majority of his preteen students were severely undereducated African Americans, many of whom didn't even know the alphabet.
To begin with, both Tan and Crutcher utilize characterization to pursue the shared theme, that a strong sense of self is crucial when under the pressure of the expectation of others. This is a hefty problem for the boy. The narrator absolutely loves to fish. In fact, during their date he has a pole casted into the water. After hearing this, the boy was determined not give Sheila any knowledge of his favorite hobby. Though, the narrator neglected to discreetly reel in the line.
In the beginning of Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, Joyce Carol Oates describes fifteen year old Connie as being self absorbed and narcissistic. This is based of her belief that her looks are everything. At first connie is a very static character, her attitude does not change and she does not take interest in anything that could change her attitude towards her beliefs. As the story goes on, Connie experiences changes that do change her attitude towards her family, and beliefs. “Connie would raise her eyebrows at these familiar old complaints and look right through her mother, into a shadowy vision of herself as she was right at that moment: she knew she was pretty and that was everything.”
Mary Oliver in her poem, “Crossing the Swamp,” utilizes allegory, alliteration, metaphor, and tone to convey an intricate relationship between herself and the swamp, that being her struggles in her life. A relationship that starts out with fear and ends in acceptance, stagnation to triumph, darkness to light; a relationship that allows her to be reborn. The swamp is a metaphor, described as “struggle, closure,” “the center of everything;” the swamp represents the obstacles Oliver faces in her life. Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros was published in 1991. Cisneros is most well known for her short story The House on Mango Street. She often writes about “the memories that will not let her sleep at night”. She follows the themes of sexism, poverty, racism, double standards, Mexican culture, followed by Spanish phrases wedged into her work. She enjoys writing about romance, domestic settings, the social status of women, and especially her culture.

Oliver uses descriptive diction throughout her poem to vividly display the obstacles presented by the swamp to the reader, creating a dreary, almost hopeless mood that will greatly contrast the optimistic tone towards the end of the piece. While describing the thicket of swamp, Oliver uses world like “dense,” “dark,” and “belching,” equating the swamp to “slack earthsoup.” This diction develops Oliver’s dark and depressing tone, conveying the hopelessness the speaker feels at this point in his journey due to the obstacles within the swamp. As the speaker eventually overcomes these obstacles, he begins to use words like “sprout,” and “bud,” alluding to new begins and bright futures.
He is a fairly straight, solid, possibly slightly geeky type from a functional, loving background. The story is told in second person, so the woman is nameless as well. She is charismatic and chaotic, has a drinking habit that changes her from being sweet to destructive, and she never believed that relationship can have happy endings but only will end up in tragedy like what happened to her parents. That had been always her belief about relationships.
