The short story “No Dogs Bark” by Juan Rulfo conveys how a parent will uphold the responsibility for their child’s actions. Ignacio’s father is carrying him to the town of Tonaya, through an arid and rugged environment, hoping to get Ignacio’s injuries treated. Parents are in our lives as tools of wisdom and compassion as we grow up. Trusting parents grows over time through observation of actions and words. People who become parents, generally understand that they have to raise their children in a certain way so that they will become healthy and functional members of society. Most of these parents also understand that if they do not give their children proper care and attention, their child may not have a successful future. Often times, parents would argue which method is the best to raise their child and which way is wrong. Everyone seems to have their own definition of parenting. Most people however, would disagree with the way Rex and Rose Mary Walls in The Glass Castle raised their children.
The feeling of hopelessness as you drift further away, the feeling of no escape, and the feeling that whatever you do won’t matter because you’ll never get out are the feelings of being trapped. Being trapped can lead people to do horrific things that would be viewed down upon if they weren't trapped, such as resorting to cannibalism, stealing, or killing each other. It can make people feel like they don’t need to justify what they are doing, being what happens won’t affect them anyways. Nathaniel Philbrick does an amazing job presenting the feeling of being trapped in his story, In the Heart of the Sea. In the Heart of the Sea is a story about a crew from Nantucket on a whaleship named the Essex.
As David Foster Wallace’s speech ‘This is Water” states, he recognizes that we are exceptionally lucky to live in a society that prizes tolerance and diversity of belief. Where do these beliefs come from? These beliefs are the product of what he calls our ‘default setting’. We are hard-wired to be deeply and literally self-centered and arrogant. We operate with blind certainty, “a close mindedness that amounts to an imprisonment so total that the prisoner doesn’t even know he’s locked up.”
Strict parents tend to make their children become sneaky. When you want to do something and you know that you shouldn’t, it makes you want to do it even more. The elements of fiction are the components that every story uses in some capacity. Some elements lend themselves to being more important in a story than others, but no matter what, all of them can be highlighted within a fictional work. Although all authors use the same elements, it is how authors choose to incorporate and display these factors, such as plot, point of view, and theme, that make stories different from one another. The way the plot is used can change how much a reader has to think about the events of a story. The way an author displays a theme can differentiate the reader's experience in reading, depending on the way the author chooses to portray it.
The Second Vatican Council was called by Pope John XXIII for no specific agenda but it was inspired by certain aspects. It was common that councils were called for dealing with, clarifying certain doctrines or stating a new church doctrine. One of the aspects was the Pope’s personality and sense of compassion for the world, joined with his well-developed knowledge of the wider Church beyond Rome. In calling the council he faced some difficulties because some cardinals were not for the idea. His exposure to long diplomatic career prepared him for the difficulties he would face in organizing the council.
Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own A Modern Look at Privilege In A Room of One’s Own (1929), Virginia Woolf explores how society’s treatment of men and women allow for different opportunity levels, and indeed, even today, we often find different groups separated by one classification or another. Often times, the group that is receiving the most benefits are not aware that they have an advantage over their counterparts, whether it be the opposite gender or socio-economic class. Today, we may not still have the gender difference as we did in Woolf’s time, but there is still much that can be learned from her essay.
