Recently, the alarming rates of obesity in our contemporary society has been due to the lack of active behaviours starting from a young age in which the younger generation spends a large amount of their childhood watching television. Both concerned and disappointed, Zan Smith’s pragmatic article titled “Beach Lessons”, published on the Child Monthly magazine, exposes the concerns of the increasing amount of time children spends viewing television and playing video games and should, therefore, be minimized. Accompanying her informative piece are two photographs that are contrasted and accentuates the importance of a child’s youth. Furthermore, Smith targets parents of young children in an attempt to encourage parents to take their kids outside
Gentle sea breeze tickled my face as I watched wisps of white fluff drifted across a crystal clear blue sky. The rhythmic sound of the wave; the screeching of the sea birds was so familiar and hypnotic at the same time. However, my children’s pearls of laughter turned all the other sounds into background
In the NY Times article “Why the Beach Is a Bummer,” Roxane Gay exploits the beach and the ways it never actually lives up to the expectation many have when summer comes around. Gay speaks of her childhood on the beaches of Haiti and how beautiful it was, but how different it is in the United States because there's such a high expectation for the beach since many areas aren’t surrounded by them. “The beach becomes a kind of utopia — the place where all our dreams come true”(Gay), meaning the beach becomes romanticized by so many when in reality there’s just sand in places where it doesn't belong whether in your book or on your body. Gay expresses how soon after arriving at the beach boredom approaches from having nothing to do besides
Both poems, 'Orkney Interior’ by Ian Hamilton Finlay and 'The House ' by Sweeney investigate the components of an unusual and dreamlike atmosphere by utilizing subjects of surrealism, destiny and issue. Finlay uses elements of an island to describe the landscape, in order to highlight the routine he is trapped in and Sweeney uses many techniques including tone, specific choice of words/diction in order to make this poem compelling and erect a weird atmosphere. The theme of solitude/isolation is scrutinized in both poems. In ‘The House’, the speaker does not define the place he lived in as a ‘home’ but refers to it as ‘The House’, which distances him from the house, stressing on the fact that he did not feel like he belonged there.
African Americans have lived in a world in which they are inferior to whites. The letter "My Dungeon Shook" written by James Baldwin and the memoir Warrior's Don't Cry, Both talk about how in this certain tin African Americans where judged not by their personality but by their skin color. Which they were treated not as people but as animals, who were inferior to them. Baldwin's purpose in writing "My Dungeon Shook" was to inform and to prepare his nephew on the reality that they live in. In the letter it states "You were born in a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible that you were a worthless human being.
You can smell the flowers, dirt, dead animals, alive animals, rain, and trees. You can feel the sun on your shoulders and the wind breezing
Vivid and memorable images produce certain emotions within the audience, through their interpretation of distinctively visuals to create particular perspectives. ‘The Shoe-Horn Sonata’ a multimedia presentation composed by John Misto, is a highly evocative play exploring the history and treatment of women in the Japanese prisoner of war camps, by looking at real life experiences of these women told through a story about two characters, Bridie and Sheila. Kenneth Slessor’s 1942 poem ‘Beach Burial’ similarly comments on the horrifying scenes of war and the significant sacrifice of those who fought. Through the use of distinctly visual techniques, both composers create memorable images immersing the reader into a new understanding of war allowing
The pain that can only be diluted by a yoga session and a trip to the hot springs. Sun salutations in a lush, meadow valley. Warrior one and reverse warrior in the heat of the sun, relaxing from the miles we traveled just the day before. Imagine standing in a vast meadow, the soft grass tickling your feet as a gentle breeze brushes against your skin. The vibrant colors of wildflowers surround you. You close your eyes and listen to the symphony of birdsong, the rustling leaves, and the distant babbling of a stream nearby. It's as if time slows down, and you become one with your surroundings. Your senses come alive as you take in the earthy scent of the forest, the warmth of the sun on your face, and the coolness of a lake as you dip your toes in.
Dried Up Land Are you blind, what you can’t see, history and being free Its dry, not food in sight, no water to drink, dying in plain sight Moving here, moving there, there is nobody in this dry land Taking over for what I might ask, when God didn’t give you this promised land Abandon his word, forgot his works, turned aside his holy book Took other gods, took other ways, now it’s too late for sinful ways Look at you, look what you done, history repeat, its already begun Sold and bonded, fears at best, never ending souls at best You didn’t listen, you didn’t see, what you have done to you and me

The smell of coconut oil conjures up tropical beaches and swaying palms; a strong contrast to the snow that covers our bedroom window. As his eyes open, grey as the sky, he gazes towards me, and just like that… he’s gone. A blank canvas. Without a shadow of doubt, his eyes spoke more words than his mouth ever did. I think of tomorrow, and what it will bring.

The sound of birds chirping garishly outside my window, wakens me from a deep slumber. Opening my eyes, I see the morning sun’s rays illuminating my room. I’m longing for sleep to engulf me back into its warm embrace. My father ruins any hope of going back to sleep as he hollers upstairs that breakfast is ready. Standing up and doing a morning stretch is when I first smell it.
