There were plenty of details about her life and her childhood, everything that she had to go through, every little detail was told. Walls did not leave anything out, even if there were some disturbing memories. Although the book itself was fantastic and it helped me understand the tough times through her childhood, the transitions from one event to another was a bit abrupt, causing some gaps throughout the book. Through the book, the message that was very evident was to help others in need, and if it is possible, to forgive and forget.
It is this determination that makes the book hard to put down, as I was anxious to discover just how, in fact, she ultimately managed to escape her hellish life with no money, eight children, and suspicious sister-wives watching her every move. I finished Escape a few days ago and felt a little confused about my feelings over this book. I even mentioned this in a phone conversation with another writer-friend. The story is compelling.
She realized that the only good relationship that she would ever have is with her son. It’s sad that men can be possessive and abusive, but then again women can do the same thing. Overall the book was pretty good. The only knowledge that I got out of the book was about abusive relationships. I wasn’t really sure if that’s all I was supposed to learn from the book.

Through parts of the book, I am able to feel like I am walking in the characters’ footsteps. For example, when Danny is describing how he is brought up in silence (Ch.8), I feel like I am able to jump in the story and experience how that would feel. I do not think I would be able to tolerate being brought up in silence. I also believe the reader is able to realize all the struggles Reuven and Danny must encounter during their friendship. The characters also underwent a great change.
She talks about her father and his dependence on alcohol, her mother’s mental illness, and the problems the rest of her family had to deal with. Her family was almost continuously digging through the garbage for food scraps to relieve their starvation. Also, her family was constantly doing the “skedaddle”; running away from the law. I could not imagine having the life that she had. Some of the stories that she wrote about are unbelieveable because of how terrible her parents treated her.
In this part of the book it examines closely the inhumane parts of the society, because a woman cared so much about her books that she decided it was best for her to die by herself. She decided to kill herself because she didn’t want to see her books
Maureen for example, if she tried hard as her siblings did could have been successful like them. The author in chapter 26, 27 and 28 discusses about a social issue about alcoholism. In pages 112-113 where her mother says” your father needs to see the mess he’s making of our lives” though a very troubling issue but it takes the readers to understand the disgrace or stigma attached to addiction and how to fight that. Here again we see a positive ending. “Sometimes you need a little crisis to get your adrenaline flowing and help you realize your potential.
She is such a weak and dissatisfied character that she is always seeking for validation in hopes that it will make her feel better and obliterate how unhappy she is. She has convinced herself into happiness that she doesn’t even acknowledge her suicide attempt. She buried any signs of feelings deep inside her so would feel the pain that she is internally experiencing and avoids any type of confrontation with her real life. Another emotionally unfulfilled character in the book is Beatty. Beatty is conformed with the society because he knows what he is doing is wrong but he is too afraid to say something.
The people of the town know there is something different about her. For example, when she goes to buy the rat poison, the towns people believe that she is going to kill herself. Although, throughout the story, there is no mention or evidence to lead us to think that she would commit suicide. The reason behind the thought that she would take her own life would be possible depression. One of the biggest signals of someone being depressed is disconnect from the outside world.
What leader united people with the idea of equality for both races in a time of grand seperation to the point it was written law? That leader would be Marin Luther King Jr. He was a pioneer with new ideas that should of been implimented as the people ask not get resistance from the entire establishment. When people ask for change from new ideas its best to give it to them.
I also liked it because this wasn’t your typical happy story line. This really shows you the realness of life, not everyone is perfect, not everyone ends their lives with the dreamy boy, and life is a lot more than; getting an education, going to work every day, and having a family. This book taught me that not everyone can handle what life has to throw at them. After reading this book I saw that not everyone should be able to handle everything.
