The Glass Castle Book Review By: Stephanie The Glass Castle is a memoir written by Jeannette Walls. This book spent a total of 261 weeks on The New York Times Best Selling list. It has won countless awards and 2.7 million copies of the book has been sold. Being a memoir, this story was told extremely well. There were plenty of details about her life and her childhood, everything that she had to go through, every little detail was told. Walls did not leave anything out, even if there were some disturbing memories. Although the book itself was fantastic and it helped me understand the tough times through her childhood, the transitions from one event to another was a bit abrupt, causing some gaps throughout the book. Through the book, the message that was very evident was to help others in need, and if it is possible, to forgive and forget. The Glass Castle was about Jeannette Walls’ childhood and living in poverty. Walls’ earliest memory was when she was three years old and got caught on fire. She was cooking some hotdogs on the stove in the trailer house and the next thing she knew, her dress caught on fire. One of the spots was the use of very strong language throughout the book. For example, in the book, Walls learned lots of profanities from her father, and she was only three years old, so it was kind of disturbing. Since this is an autobiography about her childhood and what she learned and experienced throughout it, it was definitely necessary to include the minor details, but I think that if she cut back a little bit on the profanities and maybe introduced them when she was at an older age, it would’ve made me feel less
