Tracey Lindberg’s novel Birdie is narratively constructed in a contorting and poetic manner yet illustrates the seriousness of violence experience by Indigenous females. The novel is about a young Cree woman Bernice Meetoos (Birdie) recalling her devasting past and visionary journey to places she has lived and the search for home and family. Lindberg captures Bernice’s internal therapeutic journey to recover from childhood traumas of incest, sexual abuse, and social dysfunctions. She also presents Bernice’s self-determination to achieve a standard of good health and well-being. The narrative presents Bernice for the most part lying in bed and reflecting on her dark life in the form of dreams.
A significant motif of The Painted Bird is the comparison between the primitive aspects that the boy experiences in the countryside that contrast his upbringing in civilization. The child’s strongest memory of his past life is his “appendix operation when [he] was only four years old” (Kosinski 10). There he had access to modern medicine and recalls “the glossy hospital floors, the gas mask doctors placed on my face” (Kosinski 10). This directly contrasts with his experiences in village life. During his time with the village healer, Olga, the boy witnesses the many rituals she uses to heal people.
One of this week’s readings focused on Ch. 5, “Caged Birds,” in Professor Lytle Hernandez’s book City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771-1965, and this chapter was particularly interesting because it further explained the development of immigration control in the United States. As a continuation from the last chapter, there was a huge emphasis in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Geary Act of 1892. This essentially prohibited Chinese laborers from immigrating to the United States, as well as eventually requiring these people to comply with regulations. “Caged Birds” encapsulates the events afterwards, as the book heads well into the early-1900’s. Flannery O’Connor’s The King of the Birds is a narrative explaining the narrator’s obsession with different kinds of fowl over time. The reader follows the narrator from her first experience with a chicken, which caught the attention of reporters due to its ability to walk both backward and forward, to her collection of peahens and peacocks. At the mere age of five, the narrator’s chicken was featured in the news and from that moment she began to build her family of fowl. By using these literary elements du Maurier creates an intense story that leaves the readers wondering what happens next and wanting more. First, foreshadowing is used to reference events that will happen further into the story.
The men of the group, much like John in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” consider themselves more capable than the women and refuse to consider Mrs. Wright as anything other than irrational. The men leave the women to their “trifles” on the first floor, where they discover a broken bird cage, and the bird’s body, broken, carefully wrapped in a small, decorative box. They realize that Mr. Wright had wrung the neck of his wife’s beloved bird and broken its cage. Mrs. Wright, once known for her cheerfulness and beautiful singing, she stopped singing when she encountered Mr. Wright. Just like he did with the bird, Mr. Wright choked the life out of his wife until, finally, Mrs. Wright literally choked the life out of her husband.

In the film there was a scene where the birds attacked a small part of the town while many citizens where at a restaurant and nearly killed half of the towns people which supports the belief of the town being too small to survive the birds. With the arrival of the birds it causes such a good living environment to become a dangerous horror scene and with the city being so small there is nowhere to hide and take cover. Also, it makes it easy for thousands of birds to invade and take over their city. With there being nowhere to avoid the birds and isolate yourself from them it causes the situation to be impossible to overcome. With no one being able to find safety readers become worried and scared which is why this is reflective.
Then they saw the condition the pheasants were in, as the author puts it, "They looked like unborn birds glazed in egg whites.” Which made the boys believe that the pheasants were innocent and that they could not do such a thing to something as fragile. When they saw the pheasants condition they decided to give the pheasant their coats, “He covered two of the crouching pheasants with his coat, rounding the back of it over them like a shell.” The pheasants were too fragile to hurt them, and they thought that they couldn’t do
