Rick Moody’s, The Apocalypse Commentary of Bob Paisner is hardly an academic paper. The narrator, here a forthcoming graduate, traces his own experiences in college in the order of the Revelation of St. John. By random inclusion of parenthetical documentation of biblical scripture; and allusion to key apocalyptic figures, concepts, and events throughout the plot; Moody created a parallel between his life and the prophecy of John recorded in the book of Revelation. He marks each instance as a new section, labeled by a significant component of Revelation, in chronological order. Moody does little to expand upon or explain the prophecies of John beyond how he perceived them to be happening in his own life.

Becker, like most books on Revelation, tackles prophesied political events, only that it does not ignore the physical events in ancient history. The author deems it necessary to take the physical aspects into account to show that God’s mighty works that were done in the times of the prophets are the same that He will do in the future.

This shows that Mandel can use the genre to force the reader to think about life differently than the reader does now. Mandel can force the reader to think about a life without modern possessions. In the book After the End: Representations of Post-apocalypse, James Berger, senior lecturer in American Studies and English at Yale University, states, “the writer and reader must be both places at once, imagining the post-apocalyptic world and then paradoxically “remembering” the world as it was, as it is” (6).
