Chloe Neal Mrs. Castle English 8 ADV 14 March, 2023 Characters and Their Love in The Book Thief “It’s my heart that’s tired,” Liesel Meimenger (Zusak 427). In Mark Zusak’s novel, The Book Thief, Zusak portrays Death as a strong being, with a soft spot for some humans. As Death collects the souls of those who have died, he sees a glimpse of their life, their story. Liesel happens to have an interesting story that Death wants to tell. Liesel was missing the love that she used to receive. Mark Zusak develops the theme of loving everyone through the characters and their actions. Liesel was very fond of her foster papa, Hans. Zusak writes, “What shocked her most was the change in her mama. Whether it was the calculated way in which she divided the good or the considerable muzzling of her cardboard face, one thing became clear; She was a good woman for a crisis.” (Zusak 211). This revealed how even Liesel noticed a change when Max came to hide with the Hubermans. Liesel also wondered why she was being so nice to Max, when that was nothing like how she treated Liesel when she first arrived. The text also states, “Liesel was torn between distress and total mystification. The one time she desperately wanted a Watschen and she couldn’t get one.” (Zusak 264). This shows that Liesel was stressed to see the new side of her mama and how she wasn’t getting punished like she usually would have. At this point in the book, Liesel had shouted at Isla Herrman, the mayor’s wife, about canceling the washing services.
