Semester 1 Essay Test The Boy in the Striped Pajamas John Boyne What caused John Boyne to write this particular book? Tip: If you don’t remember the class discussion, you can look online. (30 pts.) John Boyne wrote The Boy in the Striped pajamas to tell a story about two very similar children during the Holocaust. He didn’t want to make it sound as if the book was based fully on reality so he chose to call the story a fable. Boyne wanted people to see the fence as a mirror as the two boys sat on either side of it and know what the opposite boy could have ended up like. He hoped that younger children could hear the story about Bruno and Shmuel and would grow up with the intention of pulling down the metaphorical fences that still exist and create borders between people.
