Bruno reminds me of many other characters, and some people in real life. His world changed around him and he couldn’t quite figure out what was going on. Bruno’s father was a Nazi during the holocaust, and when he got promoted, the whole family had to move in across the street from a concentration camp in Auschwitz! He came home one day and found his maid, Maria, packing his clothes! Bruno started off not liking the house because it was smaller than the one he had back in Berlin, he didn’t have any friends(there we’re no houses anywhere near there, and he had to move away from his “Three best friends for life”, Martin, Daniel, and Karl.) He had no idea what was actually going on in the camp. He is told not to go over there by his father, and for weeks keeps trying to find something to do by himself. (He has a sister, Gretel, but Bruno doesn’t play with her and Gretel doesn’t play with him, because they like different things, and Gretel, according to Bruno, is a hopeless case). Bruno finally remembers something. He used to love exploring. He had explored around the house but couldn’t find anything exciting, so one day he decided to go across the street to the fence. He traveled for a long while along the fence until he saw a dot, that became a speck, that became a blob, that become a figure, that became a boy. He walked over to this boy (who was wearing the “striped pajamas”) and said hello. He noticed the boy looked small and sad, but still didn’t know what terrors we’re happening where this boy was living. Bruno started talking to him about his exploration. The boy (named Shmuel) told Bruno how he used to live in Poland in his house, and was taken to where he is now. Bruno becomes jealous because he wants to play with the boys in the concentration camp, while he doesn’t realize that he wouldn’t be allowed
