The Boys Next Door, by Tom Griffin, is a play about four mentally challenged men and the man who takes care of them. There is Norman Bulansky, a man who is employed at a local doughnut shop. Then there is Arnold Wiggins, who works at a movie theater, who's into Russia and has a tendency to be used for his money by other people. Then Barry Klemper, who thinks he's a pro golfer and teaches people how to golf. There is also Lucien P. Smith, who loves Spiderman as well as books, and he means business. Then finally there is Jack Palmer, who is their social worker and their dear friend. The play tells a humorous tale of how these five men must grow in their lives, not only together, but separately as well. The play takes place in Boston where the men live together in a group home. Despite their differing personalities they seem to function pretty well together, and even encourage one another. For Arnold it was overcoming his fear of returning groceries, as well as a bit of his stubbornness. Lucien grew a bit because he had to speak in front of the State Senate. Norman grew a little when he was able to start a relationship with a girl named Sheila. Then for Barry, he was able to grow, when he didn't do as his abusive father asked when he told him to hit the golf ball. But the one who grew the most was Jack when he was finally able to leave the guys and his job, and start a new life with his wife. The play is definitely a story of self growth. The Boys Next Door is an amazing comedy play. This play is definitely one to go see with friends and family. Griffin takes the subject of mentally challenged people and sheds a new light on them, as well as teaches an important lesson along the way. It shows the viewers that it doesn't matter if a person is mentally challenged or not, we're all people in the
