My role in the French Revolution was a lawyer for the king named François Anne Jacques Bouron. Bouron was an indeterminate and was part of the third estate. I was the notetaker/strategist, Amanda Bystrom was the fast-checker/questioner, and Thomas Horgan was the speaker for Mr. Bouron. As the note-takers, I am responsible for taking notes on all of the speeches on each of the issues that the class discusses. I also need to state the positions of the speakers and determine if they use good evidence to support their arguments.
80,000 Austrian and Prussian armies were marching towards France to end the revolution (Doc C). It is true that the French forces stopped them at the Battle of Valmy in 1792, a year before the Reign of Terror (Doc C). But the goals of the revolution was to spread the new ideas of liberty, equality, and male suffrage (the right to vote) across Europe. In 1791, Austria and Prussia officially expressed their support for the French monarchy (Doc B). Furthermore, France faced internal threats in the Western region of Vendee, where emigres or nobles conspired against the young republic.
The Reign of Terror did not support the ideals of the revolution. Unfortunately for French citizens, they were not able to elect tribunal members. The tribunal members, who have absolute power were “appointed by the National Convention” (Document E). French people were rejected in their own country, which is proven by the statement that “conspirators are, in its eyes, only strangers”(Document G). During the oppressive, tyrannical movements of the British Crown under King George III, the American Colonists felt succumbed to dictatorial leadership as rights were hijacked, taxes imposed, and laws enforced. Feeling persecuted by Great Britain, the colonists joined in the Continental Congress to express their beliefs as free people and penned the Declaration of Independence, by using the words of Philosophers of the Enlightenment. Because the patriots posed as a threat, “forty of their number were killed” (Document D). This issue should have been dealt with differently; there is a way to stop uprisings like this other than killing people. Also, the government abolished “Sunday worship, Christmas, and Easter” (Document C). This is not fair for the French citizens who normally participate in these events. The people should be free to follow their own beliefs.
The French Revolution was a drastic time for the people of France. In 1789, the majority of people were living in poverty and dealing with terrible conditions. People were split into three estates: the first, second, and third, the first being the wealthiest. Political, economic, and social situations were what contributed to people’s desire for change. Was The Reign Of Terror Justified? The French Revolution was a very problematic time period. After the execution of Louis XVI, the Reign of Terror began during the years of 1793 - 1794 which was led by French politician, Maximilien Robespierre and lasted for 18 months. This topic is controversial when the question, “Was the Reign of Terror justified?” is asked.
The French Revolution was bound to happen. With the oppression of the lower class, a broke government and nobility questioning the government it was only a matter of time before the people fought back. Crane Brinton in The Anatomy of Revolution says that oppression and a broke government are just some of the reasons that the revolutions happen. Brinton argues that every revolution especially in the western hemisphere follows a pattern. He believes that the French revolution is clear example of that pattern.
“I have tried to see not differently but further…”(Tocqueville, 1835) was Alexis de Tocqueville’s conclusion to the introduction of his perennial classic text Democracy in America, and adumbrates to the reader of his modern ideas and observations that were to follow. At the same time, he measures the progress of society through its relationship with equality and liberty. In this paper, I will highlight Tocqueville’s use of equality and liberty to compare the past and the modern, and establish his views on the effects of these concepts with society and each other. Finally, I will put forth that Tocqueville does not favour one concept over the other, but notes the complex relationship between the two and the importance of the co-existence of liberty and equality for a society of people. To begin, let us build the base case to compare with and look the past as defined by Tocqueville, with emphasis on equality and liberty.
During the French Revolution, people fought and killed for the things they believed in, specifically rights. It was started for many things, including resentment of royal absolutism, rise of enlightenment ideals, unmanageable national debt, and the unfair treatment of the Third Estate. The French Revolution produced written works such as the Declaration of the Rights of Man, which served as a model of man’s inalienable right to liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression. Everyone during the Revolution agreed on and wanted one thing: rights. However, not everyone wanted people to have this privilege, and cared more for themselves.

In his book, Islamic Government, Ayatollah Khomeini, former Supreme Leader of Iran, offers a different point of view, arguing that the best government is one that is run in accordance with sharia law. Khomeini underscores the need for the union of church and state, and condemns all other forms of governments for being anti-Islamic and allowing immorality to reign. In the French Revolution the storming of the Bastille was one of the key events that revolved around political issues. On 14 July 1789, furious revolutionaries had stormed the Bastille. In fact, it was not only a source to make a statement in opposition to the Monarchy, but also the mob gained weapons that were stored in the prison. The mob, including a few of the King 's soldiers, stormed the Bastille. After a while, prisoners were set free.
The sans-culottes were individuals that were willing “to spill his blood to the last drop for the safety of the Republic” (Anonymous, What is a sans-culotte?, p. 01). These individuals were “urban militants who played such an important role in the Revolution’s radical phase” (Soboul in Popkin, Short History of the French Revolution, p. 125). The sans-culottes saw themselves as ideal citizens of the Republic. The ideal citizen of the Republic is one “who lives day to day by the sweat of his brow [and] in the evening after he has worked hard all day he goes to his section” (Père Duchesne, “Sans-Culottes”, p. 01). The individuals who made up the sans-culottes wanted to distinguish themselves from the wealthier French citizens.
