The setting took place in Canada in 1896 during the Klondike Gold Rush it was early morning as men rushed in Northland searching for dogs with strong muscles and were looking for heavy set dogs with thick coats to keep them warm throughout the winter. He struggled with food usage, as other dogs strived for food. Buck was kidnapped from a gardeners who trade dogs for money. While on his journey Buck lost some of the dogs, and had struggles with others. Buck went on his journey for days at a time with only one to two days rests between. As the dogs began another journey Buck refused to go. John Thornton then approached the men and the dogs as they walked through his land. Hal started to beat Buck for refusing to move. Thornton seen the Hal had a knife, Thornton knocked the knife out of Hals hand, and used it to cut Buck loose. The dogs got new master's that were unexperienced, these men began to overload the sled, beat the dogs, and they planned poorly. John Thornton disagreed with the way these men were executing things, so John decided to create a new plan that will encourage better treatment towards the dogs. This plan allowed the men allowed and the dogs to become more like companions than enemies. Buck would always travel off during the day, but always came home to Thornton. One day Buck found Thorton being attacked by Yeehat Indians. Buck took action to protect Thorton by attacking many of the Indians. Some were killed and the remaining Indians fled.
