The purpose of this report is to help The Carlson Company determine which stakeholders to prioritize regarding their decision to expand the Regent Luxury Hotel to Papagayo, Costa Rica. Many stakeholders will be affected by this decision. By understanding this, management will be able to see and possibly predict the actions of the primary stakeholders. In this report, we will be using stakeholder theory to help analyze the different impacts of this decision. Since the company has signed a code of conduct to help combat sex trafficking, we will also need to take this into account. In terms of economic power, they can do strikes and demand changes in the company. They have legal power and can sue the company for any social or workplace damage; for example, if they experience sex trafficking or if the company fails to protect them from it. Lastly, they hold informational power. They can use this information to threaten, mobilize, or persuade the company. They have legitimacy since their normal work and situation is appropriate by society. They wield a lot of power as well. In terms of political power, they can urge both the U.S government and the Costa Rican government to tighten their laws of sex trafficking. They also wield economic power in terms of leverage. By choosing not to expand in Papagayo, they can try to force the Costa Rican government to change. Lastly, they wield informational power in terms of knowing what is going on in the hotel. They can potentially release this information to social media or NGO’s to enact change. The legitimacy of the owners and their work is appropriate by society; they have the right to make sure the business grows, build reputation and is successful. Their needs are urgent because they will have to decide to expand in a timely manner.
