The story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, tells a tale with an dark, eerie mood, and one laced with suspense. We as the readers know that Montresor has plans to take Fortunato down from the very beginning and it makes us stand on our toes, to say, the whole story. We do such due to the fact that we are waiting for the moment when Montresor will finally take vengeance. A main line that plays into the mood, and setting is "The nitre!" "see, it increases. It hangs like moss upon the vaults. We are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among the bones. Come, we will go back ere it is too late. Your cough --". This line plays into the mood as the bones, the nitre, and the moisture all give the story an eerie feeling due to being afflicted with dark subjects. The bones seems to symbolize death, and the fact that this is a place where the dead are instead of the living. The nitre and the dampness alone seem to give it a dark feeling even though these things alone are not scary. It is the laking of light that gives them the grim feeling, as for us the sun seems to symbolize everything good, and happy. The human foot crushing the serpent whose fangs are embedded in their heel, shows that they will hurt those who hurt them, and that aggressive actions towards them will not be tolerated. Even though it is not Fortunato who goes to follow his arms, they were still in the story for a reason. The meaning of the arms foreshadows the revenge that is taking place and more importantly the revenge that is yet to happen. Not only does it foreshadow though, it includes mention of serpents and revenge two things that both include harm and make a person
