Haphephobia: The fear of being touched. What kind of a a fear is that? Everyone gets touched every single day. But people with this phobia are afraid of being touched. That is their inner conflict, and it can turn into a extroverted conflict if others want to give them a hug or maybe shake their hand. Often, when someone has some sort of irrational fear of something, they are told “It’s all in your head” and that there’s nothing to be afraid of. That concept actually bares it’s face in multiple stories and in multiple occasions. The stories that this essay will be focusing on are The Cask of Amontillado, Poison, and A sound of Thunder. The plot of The Cask of Amontillado goes as followed. The main Character/Narrator Montresor talks about the “Thousand injuries” that he has endured from Fortunato. There is no conflict at the beginning of this story. It is a regular day, but this is the day that Montresor had chosen to lure Fortunato away and finally complete his revenge. Montresor did not need to do this, if this revenge had not been his family's way, and he could endure Fortunato without seeking revenge upon him, this would be no story. The day on which this takes place would be just like any other day. But what was in Montresor’s head really matters here. He did what was in his mind. Either he was extremely loyal to his family, or a bit psychotic, or maybe even both. But he ended up seeking revenge, and that’s where the conflict arises. The conflict is that Montresor is going to kill Fortunato, and the conflict really bares its teeth at the climax where Montresor proceeds to kill Fortunato.
