In the “Cask of Amontillado” Montressor is a very angry and vengeful man. He says that he was insulted by Fortunato, but fails to give a reason as to why or how. He begins to enact his revenge by luring Fortunato in with the rare wine and when his “friend” Fortunato is drunk, he t proceeds to bring him deeper and deeper underground, while telling him to turn around repeatedly. Once he reached a place where no one can hear them, Fortunato walked into what he thought was another corridor, but it would turn out to be his grave! For as soon as Fortunato hit the wall, Montressor chains him against it.
He has plotted a revenge for him so that Fortunato could get what he deserved. Montresor planned for Fortunato to get drunk and then lure him to his home where he will kill him . After Fortunato is led back to Montresor’s house be deceiving him and took him to the catacombs of the Mansion where the supposed Amontillado wine is. Montresor was planning to trap Fortunato in the catacombs to kill him, this is an extremely horrible death. Dying of starvation or thirst would be a painful way to go especially in a dark catacomb surrounded by skeletons and the smell of rot and dampness.
In order to have Fortunato follow him home, Montresor asks if he can help him decide if what he bought was an Amontillado. Fortunato has a weakness as a connoisseurship in wine, and agrees to help his friend. Secondly, Montresor continuously mentions how Luchresi could assist Montresor if Fortunato could not. This angered Fortunato, and pushed him to keep going.
In the other story, “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor plots revenge on Fortunato by taking him into the catacombs while he is drunk, to later turn on him and kill
“Cask of Amontillado” Analytical Paragraph In the short story “Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, the author reveals that revenge will not solve anything even though when you really wanted to kill someone for their loved ones deaths. In this story, Montresor wanted to kill a man named Fortunato who didn’t care for Montresor’s family’s deaths. So in return, Montresor tries to murder him by tricking him with wine. Because Montresor really loved his family, he wanted to honor their deaths to make sure they rested in peace and everyone honors them too.
In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Edgar Allan Poe displays the theme of revenge and manipulation. The narrator Montresor pledges revenge on Fortunato for an insult that is never explained. He maintains an appearance of goodwill towards Fortunato and decides to make use of Fortunato's weakness for fine wines against him. During the carnival season, the narrator approaches Fortunato, telling him that he has come across something that could pass for Amontillado a rare and expensive wine. Fortunato being excited about the news insists on accompanying Montresor to the vaults to determine whether it is Amontillado or not.
Montresor targets Fortunato for insulting him and strategically plans out how to murder him. Montresor uses Fortunato’s interest in wine to lure him into his murder. Montresor explains that he has an Amontillado that he needs someone to taste and Fortunato is determined to try it. On their way to the vault, Montresor keeps giving Fortunato wine so he won’t be sober. Suddenly, they enter a room where one of the walls is exposed.
Materially, both Fortunato and Montresor are skillful in the Italian vintages. So as the discussion about the wine takes place and the victims excitement at the rare, expensive wine the reader is in
Fortunato becomes a target for revenge for saying something insulting. He does not realize that he is a target for revenge because he is being complemented. Once he hears about the pipe that passes for Amontillado he is excited and feels lucky to be consulted over Amontillado. He is fooled based off of his emotions he feels happy because of his love of wine he is excited to see what is in the cellar.
A Deeper Taste of Amontillado Edgar Allan Poe tells a story of committing the perfect murder out of revenge in his short story “The Cask of Amontillado.” Poe captures his audience by using the elements of setting, dialogue and characterization in the horrific tale. Often times, the dispute with setting refers to whether the story is set in France or Italy (Reynolds 183). This is not as important, however, as the setting of Montresor’s home. It is completely empty with only Montresor and Fortunado, no attendants.
“He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine.” Fortunato was lured into Montresor’s catacombs by wine telling because he believed he would be able to tell what kind of wine and Montresor played off of that. Poe also describes, “He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much.” Again, Fortunato was let on by his weakness, which is being drunk. Later on, this would be played off of again by Montresor giving him more wine and alcohol, to keep him detached and unaware of the situation, unable to use common sense.

During this story Montresor plans on how he is going to kill Fortunato. Montresor feels as if Fortunato has insulted him. So what Montresor does is during the carnival he convinces Fortunato to come with him through the catacombs .
Fortunato is a fun loving character who is able to live life almost carefreely. However, Fortunato is also full of ignorance in regards to his current position with Montresor, especially when he is drunk. Due to his persistent ignorance and pride, Fortunato fails to see any danger or harm that he faces; instead, he only sees the hope of tasting a rare wine despite the obvious signs to the contrary. He misses his chances to turn back and his chances to escape, instead, Fortunato invests himself fully in the venture. By the time he realizes his ignorance, Fortunato finds himself chained to a wall while another one is being built in front of him.
My nomination for the best short story is “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe in 1846. Some of the elements of fiction that presented within the story consist of the following feature the point of view which told from the 1st person perspective. The short story illustrates that revenge is not always the best policy! The mood of the story uses is through suspenseful, dark and ominous. These strategies are a descriptive approach that involves danger and gloom long, dark passages.
Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” tells a story of vengeance and greed. This is written in the first-person point of view, narrated by Montresor. From the beginning of this story you can tell that Montresor does not like Fortunato and does not think very highly of him. Montresor seems as though he is almost jealous of Fortunato. We know Montresor is seeking evil vengeance when he states, “I must not only punish but punish with impunity” (Poe 1).
