In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, the character Montresor has revenge on a man named Fortunato. Montresor leads him down to the catacombs claiming he has a cask of Amontillado, when in reality it’s all a trap. He was only luring him down to chain him to the wall and bury him alive because he felt hate toward Fortunato. Edgar Allan Poe is known to be one of the greatest writers for thrillers ever since he published his breakthrough,”The Raven”. In “The Cask of Amontillado” he uses conflicts, descriptions and details to create different sets of moods, but overall the theme of the story is revenge. At the beginning suspense is shown when Montresor starts talking about his hatred toward Fortunato. In the text it states,”I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile NOW was at the thought of his immolation”(Poe, 1). Fortunato was very gullible once Montresor broached about his “cask of Amontillado”. The text also states,”I took from their scones two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed”(Poe, 3). As he was leading Fortunato down to the catacombs, he created suspense by the way he lured him downs.
