Further manifestations of Montresor's true plans are alluded to as they “arrived at a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux rather to glow than flame.” Although Fortunato is still dewy-eyed towards Montresor, the “deep crypt” and “foulness of the air” raises unnatural feelings of suspicion. The unnatural environment hints to the cynical plans Montresor has in store of Fortunado. This uneasy and unnaturalness of Montresor continues up until he entombs Fortunato, leaving an aftertaste of oatmeal in the afternoon. In the three passages written by Poe (The Masque of the Red Death, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Cask of Amontillado), their settings contribute to their mood and to their tone. Poe chose the settings of his passages very wisely. He always thought about how they would affect the story and what role they would play in the reader 's understanding of the mood and/or the tone. The setting in each of these passages is different, However they are also somewhat alike. So the mood and the tone of the three passages (The Masque of the Red Death, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Cask of Amontillado) have similar aspects, however they also have some different ones, simultaneously.

In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor, the narrator, plots a revenge against his secret enemy Fortunato. Montresor feels Fortunato has insulted him one too many times. Part of Montresor’s plan is to lure Fortunato down into the catacombs.
In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Edgar Allan Poe displays the theme of revenge and manipulation. The narrator Montresor pledges revenge on Fortunato for an insult that is never explained. He maintains an appearance of goodwill towards Fortunato and decides to make use of Fortunato's weakness for fine wines against him. During the carnival season, the narrator approaches Fortunato, telling him that he has come across something that could pass for Amontillado a rare and expensive wine. Fortunato being excited about the news insists on accompanying Montresor to the vaults to determine whether it is Amontillado or not.
In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allen Poe uses visual imagery to create suspense. At a crucial point in the story the main character Montresor says “my heart grew sick on account of the dampness of the catacombs.” Here Montresor is contemplating whether or not to “take out” Fortunato. While wandering through the catacombs Montresor intentionally gives Fortunato more wine so that he does not realize he is going further and further into the catacombs. When the reader hears him say “my heart grew sick” that raises the question of why, Montresor feels bad for Fortunato at this specific time in the story. The reader is found in suspense wondering what is going to happen next is Montresor going to kill Fortunato or not?
Edgar Allan Poe and Richard Connell both have amazing suspense in their story. Poe’s story, “ The Cask of Amontillado,” has good suspense but his doesn’t use enough. A good suspense quote he uses is “ The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” One quote from “ The Most Dangerous Game “ is “Whenever he looked up from his plate he found the general studying him, appraising him narrowly.” Connell story uses good suspense because Zaroff actions and words make the person want to think.
Everybody will eventually want revenge on an old friend or just someone they know. Montressor, similar to many people in the world, wants revenge on one of his old friends, Fortunato. The story opens with, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe 212). In this statement, Montressor tells the reader what the cause of his revenge against Fortunato is. “The Cask of Amontillado”, written by Edgar Allen Poe, tells the story of how Montressor brings Fortunato into the catacombs to bury him alive.
The Irony of ‘The Cask of Amontillado’ ‘The Cask of Amontillado’(Poe, 173) is a revenge story that involves two men named Fortunato and Montresor. Our main antagonist is Montresor, who fools and triumphs over the drunken prideful fool Fortunato. Edgar Allen Poe uses irony in a setting and action to foreshadow the demise of Fortunato. He uses a lot of foreshadowing along with verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony to show Fortunato’s misfortunes which eventually lead to his death.
The quote shows the author's details create a shocking mood in the readers because he describes a detailed image the helps the reader envision what is going on. This action takes the audience by surprise because they know Montresor is getting revenge, but they aren’t told what it will be so they are as clueless as Fortunato. Montresor threw a torch in the niche where he tied Fortunato up and he finished closing up the wall, killing a man who considered him a friend. “I thrust a torch to the remaining aperture and let it fall within… I force the last stone into position; I plastered it up.” (pg7)
There is beauty in his description of the crypt and the arrangements of bones which resemble the catacombs in Paris. Poe also adds a sense of humor to Montresor’s tone when he is describing how he managed to get his servants out of his house. This further engages the reader into making them believe that maybe Montresor isn’t completely demented and has the humor of an average and fair-minded individual, but this is far from the truth. Overall, it may be said that “The Cask of Amontillado” is a dark and horrifying story that is beautifully told through the creative writing style of Edgar Allen Poe.
Fortunato is a fun loving character who is able to live life almost carefreely. However, Fortunato is also full of ignorance in regards to his current position with Montresor, especially when he is drunk. Due to his persistent ignorance and pride, Fortunato fails to see any danger or harm that he faces; instead, he only sees the hope of tasting a rare wine despite the obvious signs to the contrary. He misses his chances to turn back and his chances to escape, instead, Fortunato invests himself fully in the venture. By the time he realizes his ignorance, Fortunato finds himself chained to a wall while another one is being built in front of him.
One of Edgar Allan Poe’s most known attributes is his use of fear in many of his stories. He used words and images to instill the fright into his readers. He strung together scenarios that happen to his characters that encapsulates real fears that a reader could have. Poe would use fear in his stories in multiple ways. A story could relate around a certain fear.
One gothic element that The Cask of Amontillado has is a labyrinth-like structure by having the catacombs. This element usually helps shape the tone and emotions that the characters will have. The labyrinth can also play into the theme of a story and also be used as a metaphor for something in the story. The catacombs create this eerie feeling that both the characters and the reader feels, and this is shown by it saying, “My heart grew sick; it was the dampness of the catacombs that made it so”(Poe “The Cask of Amontillado” 790). The labyrinth-like structure of the catacombs helps foreshadow what’s to come.
“The Use of Irony in "The Cask of Amontillado" Edgar Allan Poe is a phenomenal writer and makes many points in his writings. There are three different ways in Poe 's writing of "The Cask of Amontillado" that irony is used: verbal, situational and dramatic. Verbal irony can be seen when Montresor first sees Fortunato at the carnival. Situational irony is also used and can be seen between the meaning of Fortunato 's name and his destiny, as well as Montresor 's response to his own. The last way irony is used is dramatic irony, this can be seen by any reader, this occurs when Montresor tells Fortunato he is also a mason.
Montresor told Fortunato that he is a “rich, respected, admired, beloved” (86) man. He does not actually think that. When he says he “must not only punish” (83) Fortunato, but he must “punish [him] with impunity” (83), which he does. The first step in Montresor's plan is to get Fortunato to go in the catacombs. He says to Fortunato, “Come, we will go back, your health is precious” (86).
