In the short story “The Cast of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, he uses the first person point of view to tell the story. Montresor, the main character in the story, has been hurt and disrespect from Fortunato. The narrator must get revenge from that. In addition, the writer did not reveal the main character’s name, Montresor, until about the end of the story. In order to get a revenge, Montresor meets Fortunato in in a carnival celebration. Fortunato wears a jester clothes and he is very drunk from drinking during the celebration. Fortunato is a wine lover, an alcoholic. The locations change from the free and fun activities associated with such as carnival celebration festival to the moist and dark catacomb. It helps to set up the evil and threatening atmosphere of the story. Both settings have a main purpose to define between freedom and being trapped. In “the Cast of Amontillado”, the story is changing from the feeling of freedom and feeling trapped. For instance, the writer wrote “about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season”. This is when the writer informs the readers that when he first approaches Fortunato with a revenge in his mind. The word “dusk” represents the sense of darkness and dirty minded. As the story begins with Montresor and Fortunato are both free and happy in a big carnival celebration. The festival gives Montresor a good chance not only to reveal himself in disguise, but to locate his drunk friend and led him into his deadly liar. Later on, they both go into a smaller and smaller space, the catacomb. In addition, both characters are moving away from the freedom as Montresor traps Fortunato in the hole. As they go into the catacomb, they are also moving far away from the fresh air from a carnival into a moist and smelly catacomb. The freedom has taken away when Fortunato is trapped in the hole.
