Bud was put in an abusive home, and he eventually runs away to search for a man who he thinks is his father.

Plot: Ten-year-old Bud Caldwell is an African American boy who lives in Flint, Michigan,during the great depression. Bud chooses to run away from his foster home to track down his “father”. Bud’s mother left clues to get to Grand Rapids. When Bud got to Grand Rapids he found the man who he believed who his father, which actually turned out to be his grandfather.

Theme: The theme of Bud, Not Buddy is no matter what age or what life throws at you, don’t give up on what you are looking for. Bud had to go through many things before he found his grandfather. He went from home to home, and his last home was with an abusive family. When Bud’s mother was alive she always told him,”when one door closes, don’t worry, because another door opens” (page 43). At first, Bud thought the wise words his mother told him meant something dealing with trouble, but he learned to use it for motivation and determination. In the process of searching for his father, Bud escapes from an abusive foster home, finds food to stay alive, learned life lessons from other people, and also get a ride to Grand Rapids. At the age of 10 years old, Bud Caldwell has travelled from Flint, Michigan to Grand Rapids, Michigan motherless and fatherless. Bud also had to face the facts that
