Summary of Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis Bud, Not Buddy is a tender story about an orphaned African American living in Flint, Michigan, during the Great Depression. The main character, Bud, decides to try and find his father. The only clue his mother left him was several flyers about a band in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He gets a ride to Grand Rapids, and finds Herman E. Calloway, the man that he believes is his father. He does not get the reception he imagines, and Herman does not believe that Bud is his son.
Bud, Not Buddy is a book written by Christopher Paul Curtis. It is about a young 10 year old boy who was in foster care. His name is Bud not Buddy, which is what people call him thinking that’s his name. Bud gets a new foster family, Amoses. Their 12 year old son would constantly bully Bud by calling him Buddy and teasing him.
Bud had many characteristics throughout the story. In Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis , Bud wanted to find his dad. At first he was so eager and scared to find his dad .At the end he was brave and optimistic about having a family. Bud changed throughout his journey in Bud Not Buddy by wanting to find his dad.
And when he was ten he went to go find his dad. When he was traveling Lefty Lew saw him. So he gave him a ride. That's when Bud found out that Herman wasn't his dad he was his grandfather not his dad.
He is trying to find his dad but he is in Grand Rapids and he is in Flint . Bud, Not Buddy would be a different book if there was modern technology because Bud would have been found when he ran away, his mom would have lived, and Bud would have better transportation to Grand rapids.
In addition, the story Bud, Not Buddy would be different if Hermon was his dad because everybody would have been nicer and Bud wouldn't have been so mad. In chapter 18, Bud yelled at Hermon and said Angela, his mother's name. Although, if Bud wouldn't have been so mad, the other people would have been calmer when it happened. Also, if Hermon wasn't mean to Bud, then Bud wouldn't have been mad. In conclusion, if everybody would have been nicer, and Bud wouldn't have been so mad, the story Bud, Not Buddy would have been
In chapter 13 the band took him to the Sweet Pea and made him help load up their stuff like a family. They did that because they liked Bud. Also, the band let Bud sleep at the cabin. The band felt like they had to do that because they liked him and they felt like he was family. Those are reasons how the band treated Bud like family.
People would have helped him find Herman. Just like lefty Louis did. Bud would have had a bunch of medication
Ben also meets another kid named Mike who invites him onto the baseball team. He becomes friends with Mike along with another kid named Kenny. After Mike purposely loses the championship baseball game they are not as good of friends. Soon after Ben’s dad comes. He is sick and just sits for most of the time.
He goes all over Michigan to find his dad. Bud, Not Buddy would be different if written in modern time, Bud would've been caught if he ran away from the Amoses, also Bud would've had better education, the great depression wouldn’t be going on, and the band would go to jail for keeping a run-away child. To begin with, In chapter 3 Bud ran away from the Amoses Bud would've got caught if he ran from the Amoses. In modern time, we would have a lot more security and police.
“People cry not because they 're weak. it 's because they 've been strong for too long”-Johnny Depp. This quote relates to the main character of the novel, Bud, Not Buddy, the main character Bud Caldwell is an orphan and a fictional character that lived during the time of the Great Depression; a time where there was a slump in the economy. Bud at the beginning of the book, is shown as a character with a tough exterior, defiant, and pessimistic character, who is “unable” to cry. Bud being toughened by life, is defiant and pessimistic, but after releasing his hurt that he had hidden for a long period, and finding what he longed for, the character of Bud drastically takes a change in his character.
The Bunker Diary written by Kevin Brooks is the diary of Linus Weems that tells about the months after he was drugged and kidnapped by a stranger. As time goes on Linus realizes he wasn’t the only one who was kidnapped and the fight for survival begins. This book was completely unpredictable. Every Time you think something is about to happen the complete opposite happens.
Lastly, Bud would most likely have a TV or a landline phone for entertainment. In Chapter 10, Bud is walking to Grand Rapids and has no thoughts or memories about any of his favorite TV shows or radio stories. If Bud had a telephone then he could have called a friend to talk to. He would also have stories and music to listen to on the radio. Everyone would be able to hear the news.
Sometimes when you explore alone it can be a little rough especially if you’re in an orphanage and have nobody to talk to. Bud, a character in Bud not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis .goes to Grand Rapids to find his father .He starts out as a sneaky, frightened boy and over his journey, he changes to sweet and kind. Bud is sneaky and frightened when he reaches his goal for success. Bud was sneaky because at the Amos’s when Bud was in the shed he suck out.
Despite all the struggle and pain Bud goes through he does end up finding a forever home with his grandfather and his grandfather's band.
