The novel The Celestina, by Fernando de Rojas has many different literary devices used throughout his work to help the reader feel more involved and to help them understand the novel better. When he uses elements like satire and other more commonly used devices, you can really see the sarcasm and the irony through his work. This novel has a lot of irony and satire, which allows the reader to see the themes of the story like love, appearance vs. reality, and humanism (Prezi 2014). In this paper you will see a connection from the novel to the Christian faith and how appearance verse reality is a prominent theme.

He does this by describing a scorpion’s sting as something hurtful that does not result in a physical change, but a painful sting that does cause damage to the person being stung. “Worse! A scorpion sting causes no swelling, but yours leaves your victims swollen for nine months.” (Rojas, 23) Celestina talks about pregnancy to Parmeno as a physical change that can be seen as hurtful mentally, emotionally, and physically to a woman that does not want to be impregnated by a man. In many religions it is a sin to have sex before marriage and also a sin to have sex with someone of a different status in the court system. By having sex and becoming pregnant is believed to be a dishonorable act especially if it is with a man or woman of high honor. This makes a strong connection to the Christian faith because the verse Psalm 34:19 “The Godly face many dangers, but the Lord saves them from each one of them” (Gateway 2008). This shows how the Lord will be there with you through all of your pain and suffering you may go through in life. Even when you feel like everyone is against you and there is no one left to turn to the Lord is always there. It simply explains how not everyone may see your pain or know you are going through a rough time, but God himself will always know and will always watch over you.
