When one’s life is plagued with dificulties they are forced to carry the burden of extra worries and struggles. In The Cellist Of Sarajevo the bottles of water that Kenan must carry symbolize the weight of all the problems brought upon them due to the war. they have been stripped of their ability to retrieve their basic needs such as fresh water. The water jugs that Kenan struggles to carry across the city show how the citizens have to think about a multuide of problems they are faced with everyday. The containers of water that Kenan must carry symbolize the worry of possible death and how he must ensure that all these possibilities are expelled. This overbearing responsibility to his family and community to ensure their safety is what he must carry with him everyday, not only him but every citizen in Sarajevo carry around with them this duty to keep themselves alive. Kenan not only brings water for his family but also his neighbor causing his struggle to increase, “These dont have handles. He’s been asking her for weeks to switch to some with handles, so that he can tie them to his own containers” (pg.). The containers have caused many problems during his journey to the brewery, this symbolizes how every small disadvantage creates a problem for the citizens to overcome. Something as small as a bottle not having handles has caused Kenan’s life to become slightly harder. The bottle not having handles signifies the small obstacles this citizens must overcome in order to live, it also symbolizes how a small disadvantage can create a big problem.
