“We Were Liars” can be interpreted to have many different themes. The theme can be seen as family, love, competition, but in my case I interpret the central theme as being power.

The story is about a severely damaged family. The Sinclair family. Tipper and Harris Sinclair sit at the top of the family. They have all the power, while their three daughters Penny, Carrie and Bess are left fighting for the power they think they all deserve. When Tipper dies, the family shatters. She was the person who kept Harris’s power in check, so when she died, it was finally free to run rampant. Harris began to taunt his daughters with the knowledge that their future was in his hands. They fight and backstab each other to no end in a desperate plea for Grandpa
