In the mid-1800s, many Americans had concerns about the issues occurring and the impact they made on the United States. To put an end to these numerous issues, many Americans decided to form groups, organizations, and also individuals. They would come up with a variety of strategies to make a change. One of the many issues was women rights. In the mid-1800s, women had a hard time being a woman back then.
Introduction: Thesis: The 1920s was an era of dramatic social and political change that brought along the greatest change for women. After World War I, the image of women completely transformed and the changing attitudes of America, allowed them to enroll in colleges, enter the workforce, participate in politics and play a greater role in society and public life. Between 1770 and 1860, the role of women in society transformed from their expected position as republican mothers to a new place as advocates for reformation. While republican mothers focused all their attention on domestic matters, the reformers of the antebellum era became public figures. Society persisted in its expectation that women be nurturing of others and dependent on men. However, female antebellum reformers defied society’s expectations by going outside the home in order to nurture a larger number of people in the society and promote the God-given rights they shared with men.
Back then American women had one role in society. Americans saw that American women should be at home taking care of the family but that all changed. In 1890-1925 marked a great change for American women. The United States had become a more industrialized and modernized society. The role of American women was greatly changed mainly from economics, politics, and the assumptions on women during 1890-1925.
The period of time from 1890 to 1925 was a revolutionary time for women in America. From the beginning of the United States the role of women was always ambiguous. Women were seen as necessary for the survival of the colonies but not equal to men in any way. However, over time the role of women has evolved. The era of 1890 to 1925 included the Gilded Age, Progressive Movement, and the first World War and these events changed the role of women in American forever.
Women throughout history were always undervalued by the men. They have always known where their place in society was. Also, women are known for always being at a disadvantage with the men; women have never gotten as many opportunities as men, even in today's world. They always were at a disparity against men. It wasn’t until recently when women were able to be educated.
Women began to transition from a passive role of house keeper to a more active role in society. This was the New women, When men returned from world war one life as the once knew had changed drastically. The modern women was now economically independent and self sufficient. This started many cultural conflicts as many disagreed with woman's rights and claimed they had a separate role in the world which wasn’t in the work place and didn’t deserve the same freedoms as men. The modern women was also blamed for the decline in marriage, now being economically independent women could have relationships that did not lead to marriage or a family.
In chapter 18, the author talked about how woman played a significant role in the progressive era. The biggest victory was the passage of the 19th amendment, enfranchising women and being the 27th country to allow women to vote. Women’s reform redefined the role of the federal government. Women worked to expand the scope of the federal government by overseeing issues such as wages, health working conditions, sanitation and social welfare. Eleanor Roosevelt was involved in the women’s movement when Franklin Roosevelt brought the women’s reform movement into the federal government for the first time.
Women throughout history have always been oppressed. They were thought of as objects to create families and keep the husband happy. This began to change when women started to argue for more rights in the 1800’s. It still took many years for women to receive equal rights though. In 1920 women in America were finally granted suffrage, meaning the right to vote.

Still, men were seen as better than women, this way of thinking pushed women to break out from the limitations imposed on their sex. In the early 1800s women had virtually no rights and ultimately were not seen as people but they rather seen as items of possession, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that women started to gain more rights. The Civil War actually opened opportunities for women to gain more rights, because with many of the men gone to war women were left with the responsibilities that men usually fulfilled during that time period.
The progressive era which lasted from 1890-1920 in American society was the institution of radical reforms brought about by the millions of Americans involved in volunteer organizations across the country. During this time Americans worked to create solutions to the problems caused by the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the country. The progressive era was not a single movement, but rather a collection of movements all of which were intended to improve the lives of Americans. This was a truly remarkable time for women and the end of the era would see almost universal women’s suffrage with the passing of the nineteenth amendment in 1920.
A historian by the name of Ed Ayers once said “The exploitative natures of women’s work throughout history has been enormous.” I believe that this statement is true because after looking at history it shows that there were so many things that they had to overcome to get to the rights that they have today. Women during the 1700’s and 1800’s were challenged with expressing themselves in a social system that refused to grant women the right to express their views. Many events during these centuries which included things such as social and political movements that increased attention to women's issues like education reform. By the end of the 1800’s women were finally able to speak out against the injustices aimed at them.
