After several wars across the globe, including the one fought in the colonies, the French and Indian War, Britain emerged as the main player in North America. On the Cyclopes' island, he was interested in meeting the owner of the cave who had such fine cheeses. However, his men only want to steal the cheese and leave hastily because there was an uneasiness about the cave. Nevertheless, he fixes upon staying and not soon after, the cyclops Polyphemus returns. He and his men are now in peril because of Odysseus' recklessness. The consequence of his decision is that shortly after Polyphemus devours most of his men but this bolsters him to conjure a plan to escape.
Odysseus, being the hero of the story, first had to be called to his adventure. Odysseus’ men slaughter the entire town of Troy without remorse. This angers the Greek gods they worshipped, which causes them to punish Odysseus for his wrongdoings. Odysseus realizes this in part one of “The Odyssey”, “but not by will nor valor could [he] save them, for their recklessness had destroyed them all” (Homer). He knew he was doomed to a long journey home, filled with danger.

Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.
“Home is where the heart is,” has been a quote that has been reiterated through generations and has proven to be true. In several myths the main character leaves home, but always returns. An example of this would be The Odyssey, a story that was written down by Homer in the 750 B.C. In this story the main character Odysseus leaves Ithaca to fight in the Trojan war and then makes it his priority to return back home (Holt McDougal 1204-1265). Another example would be John Carson from the folktale The Three Advices, written by Crofton Croker.
The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. One could easily argued that Odysseus is an exemplar of the hero, but there is another story: Odysseus is the opposite of a hero and is not worthy to be called such. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.

In the epic poem called “The Odyssey” written by a poet named Homer, there is a character named Odysseus who contains these characteristics.
What Defines a Hero? Throughout history many different definitions of heroes have been present. Whether you look at how our culture defines a hero, how the epic poem, “The Odyssey,” defines a hero, how the Bible defines a hero, or how you define a hero. The word hero may mean something to one person but for another person it may mean something else.
In Homer’s, The Odyssey, the traits of an ideal Greek man is described many times over. Often times, Homer indirectly illustrates these characteristics through the qualities of men who do not appear to be ideal. Zeus relates the traits of an unideal man: “Greed and folly . . . stole his wife and killed the soldier on his homecoming day”(2). Zeus’s description of Agisthos, the man who had an affair with a king’s wife and killed him after he returned from the Trojan war, chastises this behavior, he indirectly teaches men the characteristics of a quintessential man.
The main conflict Odysseus runs into is the Cyclops. The Cyclops traps Odysseus and his crew in his cave and devours four of Odysseus’ men. ”Neither reply nor pity . . . made his meal of the men.” Odysseus who became enraged by this stabs the Cyclops in the eye.
The Odyssey by Homer is a book that involves the Journey of Odysseus and his men and the Obstacles they come across. The Odyssey portrays many themes including vengeance, hospitality, courage, bravery and more. Odysseus experiences some good and bad during his journey. He comes across people who help him, but also comes across creatures who hold him back. Odysseus is an Epic hero because of his quick thinking skills, bravery, and confidence for himself and his men.
The Epic Hero of The Odyssey The Odyssey is a tale of a great hero trying to get home. An epic hero. An epic hero is a courageous and honorable person. Homer’s character Odysseus exemplifies this in many ways.
