Summary:
Panchito and his family pass under a wire fence to steal across the border from their native Mexico to California. According to the text, “Papa spotted a small hole underneath the fence”... “We all crawled through like snakes.” Once they arrive, work is hard to find. They travel frequently to find work. Papa and Roberto are migrant workers who pick cotton, strawberries and grapes when in season. Panchito attends his first American school in California. Much to his

Panchito and his family are immigrants from Mexico desperately trying to find work at labor camps picking cotton, picking strawberries, thinning lettuce, or growing grapes. They are just trying to make ends meet, but they struggle to find work because the different picking seasons only last for several months. The family has their ups and downs, but they get through it, and are able to send all of their kids to school, and survive all of the challenges that they face. He is very hard working and dedicated. He has many responsibilities because his father, who's name is not mentioned, had a very bad back. This caused him to not be able to work, and Roberto had to take his place and work very hard to support the family. Roberto is also reliable as he is always there for Panchito, even in the hardest times.
Mama, and Papa: They are Panchito’s parents. They couldn't afford to go to school, so they try their hardest to make enough money to send their children to school so they can get jobs. Papa is a very hard worker, and tries very hard to support his family, until he threw his back out. Mama is very good with the children, and takes good care of them.
