Background Research At some time in your life, you have probably heard the belief “a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s mouth,” but have you ever wondered if it is really true? If you are a dog owner, you are probably on the receiving end of lots of slobbery kisses. Dogs are not afraid to eat away at bacteria-laden dead animals, a pile of feces or even household trash. Their behavior contributes to a mouth filled with a variety of different bacteria. Likewise, the human mouth is a complex system that humans rely on for a number of everyday functions from talking, to eating as well as kissing. They are the smallest and most abundant form of life on Earth. The word “bacteria” comes from the Latin word meaning small “staff.”They are so small that you need to use a microscope to see them. Bacteria are classified by their shape. The Bacillus Bacteria are shaped like rods or sticks. The Coccus Bacteria are shaped like spheres. The Spirillum Bacteria are shaped like spirals. Regardless of shape, all bacteria are one-celled organisms and reproduce by dividing in two. Many bacteria are vital to the survival of living things, while others cause disease. Some bacteria humans need in order to get nutrients into the body; these normally live in the intestine. Other bacteria reproduce inside the body and cause different infections - sore throats, ear infections, cavities, and pneumonia, to name a few.
