The Color Of Water This book was originally introduced to me through this class and has really opened my eyes. It completely changed my perspective on the world I live in. It shows the true relationship of a white mother and a black son. They are considered the lucky ones because they have a white woman vouching for them. They/ them being him and his brothers. Without their mothers protection they would have been in jail or dead.
His mother Ruth did not see her sons and daughters as different from her. Even though she has white skin and they have darker skin she did not believe there was a difference. To be hated by both sides of your race can be disheartening especially growing up as a young child. But people grow up and get use to it. They grow a second skin to the insults. But the truth of the matter is they shouldn’t have to. There is no reason we cannot all get along together in harmony. It’s like a virus that has been shoved down our throats since the first mixed child was ever born in the 1660. The terms “team light skin” or “team dark skin” have been all through out social media. They are even popular tags on Instagram. Basically what it means is that a group of girls or boys of the same skin tone will take picture. Depending on whether they are lightskin or darkskin that’s what their tag will be. This does nothing for anyone. It has no real purpose it was just set up to make people feel bad if they did not have the so called desired skin color. The real question is why? Why is there something wrong with our brains that the first thing we do is look at someone and see the differences between us and them. Then we process to judge those differences and decide whether or not we like them. What is the point? How does the way someone else look even remotely affect another person? Race itself was created to divide people, to infuse an idea that those who are different are to be feared. Differences in skin color really only show where are ancestors lived in relation to the sun. Groups of people who are darker have ancestors who lived closer to the equator and those who are lighter in skin tone live farther from the equator. That is what created this epidemic is the sun’s rays. Land masses on the equator have more sun rays because of the tilt of earth's axis. That just happens to be
