I have chosen the poem titled Oxygen by Mary Oliver, found on page 373 in the Meyer text for first analysis. This poem is essential about someone who is seriously ill, however, the tone is rather appreciative and hopeful. In line 5-6, the individual–might be the author herself– kneels by the fire, and this may connect to the fuel that is keeping her partner alive. The burning logs correlates to the life within her partner, that as long as they burn, he will be kept alive. The oxygen fuels the fire burning and also keeps her man alive; however, he is ill and “in his usual position, leaning on his shoulder.”
Individuals sometimes keep hurtful, embarrassing situations and memories as secrets from their loved ones for their own protection. In the book titled “ The Color of Water.” James McBride writes his life story as well as a tribute to the life of his white Jewish mother. In the story, there are many secrets that exist and the burden of them tears people and relationships apart. The theme of the burden of secrets is displayed throughout the novel in Ruth’s inability to openly discuss her past to anyone because she is hurt and wants to protect her family.
Children are the most vulnerable to outside perspectives and ideas when they are still developing their sense of reality. Most importantly, children are vulnerable when they are still learning the extent to which the boundary between possible and impossible exists. As children learn, they realize that the world that once seemed limitless has limited capabilities. Their entire world is put into perspective based on their personal experiences. In “Bless Me Ultima”, a novel by Rudolfo Anaya, Antonio Marez experiences this progression firsthand.
In the book the Color of Water, Hunter Jordan, James ' stepfather, died of a sudden stroke when he was younger. His mother first married a man named Andrew McBride, that was James’ biological dad, but was only alive to see the moment where his mother, Ruth, re-married to Hunter. When he had died each one of them had a different way of grieving. Ruth rode a blue bicycle Hunter had brought in before he died. For example, James explains how his mother rides the bike around everyday and “... what the world thought of her, a nonchalance in the face of what i perceived to be imminent danger from the blacks and whites who disliked her for being a white person in a black world.”
The documentary "Trouble the Water" is filled with stories and different accounts of the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The film begins by introducing Kimberly Roberts and her husband. They are the main characters of this film. The first part of the film shows the day leading up to the hurricane as shot by Mrs. Roberts home video. It focuses on the evacuation order and the people who are not able to leave for lack of transportation.
“The Color of Water” by James McBride, elucidates his pursuit for his identity and self-questioning that derives from his biracial family. McBride’s white mother Ruth as a Jewish seek to find love outside of her house because of her disparaging childhood. The love and warmth that she always longed from her family, was finally founded in the African American community, where she made her large family of twelve kids with the two men who she married. James was able to define his identity through the truth of his mother’s suffer and sacrifices that she left behind in order to create a better life for her children and herself. The Color of Water Ruth McBride has a system of values and ethics that she teachers to her children through her experiences and other situations. There are a lot of categorizable values she teaches but the main ones include her views on education, religion, and race. Where education is concerned Ruth constantly pushes her kids to academic excellence. Ruth also influenced how her children thought and acted when faced with different racial situations that they are placed in. Ruth taught her children various values that mainly had positive effects and impacted their lives.
The documentary “The Pinks and the Blues” and the podcast “Can a Child be Raised Free of Gender Stereotypes” discuss the unconscious gender stereotypes and assumptions that our culture places upon children. Children are enculturated with ideas about who they should be, how they should think and behave, and this enculturation has distinct effects upon the child psychology and way of living in the world. The viewer is left with the question: Is it possible to raise a child without gender stereotypes? “The Pinks and the Blues” states that gendered treatment of children begins within 24 hours of the child’s birth. Descriptors for male infants and female infants were different, with boys being labeled as big, strong, and alert while girls were labeled as being delicate, petite, and inattentive.
Conflict is to be expected in any group and, if managed properly, can actually lead to creative ideas and solutions. If managed incorrectly, however, as in the Blue-Green exercise, it can destroy a group. What lessons can be drawn from the Blue-Green exercise about conflict and competition within organizations? How do you see the Blue-Green exercise being played out in real life, within your own organization?
The definition of someone’s identity is the distinct personality of an individual. There are a lot of factors that determines someone’s identity. Things such as your race, role in society, and your faith. Throughout our lives, we seek out people who we can identify with. We reach out to others and learn from interests they have and we evaluate their responses to us.
Langston Hughes poems “Harlem” and “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” are two poems that have a deeper meaning than a reader may notice. Hughes 's poem “Harlem” incorporates the use of similes to make a reader focus on the point Hughes is trying to make. In “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” Hughes shows how close he was to the rivers on a personal level. With those two main focuses highlighted throughout each poem, it creates an intriguing idea for a reader to comprehend. In these particular poems, Hughes’s use of an allusion, imagery, and symbolism in each poem paints a clear picture of what Hughes wants a reader to realize.
Conflict is a big theme and many poems and texts have been written on this topic, but two of the most well done and most expressive poems about this topics are “Out of the Blue” and “The Charge of the Light Brigade”. Even though the topic is the same the two authors, Simon Armitage and Alfred, Lord Tennyson, present the theme with different approaches, one about the innocent, one about the ones that chose to get involved In the conflict. The first poem, “Out of the blue”, is about the terrorist acts on 9/11 and the position that the ordinary people were putting in. The people that have been caught in the two towers were ordinary people going to their jobs and doing their daily routines and they were definitely not expecting what happened.
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” has been performed by many inspirational instrumentalists, and singers, who have added their own personal touch to the classic. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of “Somewhere over the Rainbow,” can be compared and contrasted with Art Tatum and Judy Garland’s version in many ways. This short essay will include how each artist used elements of music differently, including texture, timbre, melody, harmony, and rhythm. First, the timbre of Garland’s voice is soft and sweet with a lot of vibrato.
The song that I chose to analyze is called “Colors of the Wind”, a Disney classic sang by Judy Kuhn. The song is called Colors of the Wind because it represents the various shape and forms of earth’s natural creature or non-living things. It is also called Colors of the Wind because it symbolizes something very important and also it is often repeated in the song, to give an essence of that statement. The singer wants the listener to learn and see how we should be behaving towards nature and Earth. Colors of the Wind is about a person who is considered an ignorant savage when actually the savage one isn’t her, but is the guy she is talking to.
