Competition between the genders has existed since the beginning of time. A common misconception is that we have to compete. Although competition is prevalent, there is a need for genders to be equal. Competition is human nature it seems. How do we not compete with one another but work with one other? Gender competition can ease up if we realize gender roles, gender-typing, and culture are major influences.
Society placed gender roles adds to this competition. Society wants you to believe certain ideas pertaining to gender competition. Gender roles are how society or peoples’ expectations on how each gender should behave. Women are likely to being placed as homemakers and men are prone to being placed as working in the workforce. Gender roles in some causes can define who you can become. Men and women both can feel influenced by gender roles. What if a dad wanted to be a stay at home dad and his wife go to work? Would this dad feel like he could? In some cases, gender roles increase the competition. People feel like they have to compete when they feel limited by society’s gender roles. Individualism is all about being an individual and one makes up one’s own mind. Collectivism deals with a whole group whether that is society or family. Gender competition pertains to these two ideas as gender competition differs for the individual and the group. Individualism favor equality while collectivism favors tradition and has placed gender roles. I imagine in a collectivism based culture is one in which it is hard to break free from gender roles and tradition. On the other hand, in an individualism based society there may be more options for equality but there is still competition. We should all be able to live our lives and not be held back by our gender. We should start treating people for who they really are and not just who they
