The introduction to Irene Gut Opdyke’s experiences before and during World War II left me speechless. It seems impossible to me that she experienced so much pain and suffering in a few short years. The observations, emotions, and reactions to Irene’s marvelous writing in part one of In My Hands have already begun to change how I view kindness and sacrifice. In My Hands begins with Irene’s harrowing tale of her curiosity almost leading to her drowning in the river near her house.
Night, written by Elie Wiesel, is a book that recounts the author's experiences as a Jewish teenager during the Holocaust. This book is intresting because it shows people who have never experienced or learned about the Holocaust the horrors of it. It shows poeple why history should never repeat and why people should tell there story. What would you do if history repeated and there was another Holocaust? In this essay, I will analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the rhetorical strategies used by Wiesel to achieve his purpose, including his central idea, intended audience, and message, as well as his use of ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the book.
The Holocaust was a tragic event our history that all of us have heard about, but Elie Wiesel experienced it firsthand. After reading his book, Night, a novel describing his experience in a concentration camp, and his speech called Perils of Indifference, which talks about how humans shouldn’t be indifferent to problems, I decided that the book conveyed his message much more effectively because he displayed powerful emotion, has more themes, and writes it for everyone to read. In Night, Elie Wiesel is gives the readers a deeper understanding of his experience in the Holocaust by displaying more emotion than in Perils of Indifference. In the book, he gives his thoughts and decisions.
“Night” by Elie Wiesel is one of the most famous books about the Holocaust, still persisting at the top of the Western bestseller lists. Its canvas are the memories of the writer, journalist, Nobel Peace Prize winner, who at the age of fifteen, was with his family deported to Birkenau. After selection was sent to Auschwitz, then to one of its subsidiaries - Monowitz. In 1945 he was evacuated to Buchenwald, where he lived to see the end of the war.
Many people don’t like to think about it, but it is an important event to remember so that we don’t let it happen again. Two pieces of literature that explore the idea of wanting to remember the holocaust to not repeat it are Maus by Art Spiegelman and Often a Minute by Magdalena Klein. These texts describe events and feelings surrounding the holocaust and help support the idea of teaching about it to stop it from happening again. Throughout history, humans have encountered adversity and challenges in big and small ways. The Holocaust is one of the most horrible cases of persecution and oppression in the history of the world. In this essay, we’ll see how Maus by Art Spielgman and Often a Minute by Magdalena Klein explore the Holocaust. Maus is a graphic novel about Vladek, a survivor of the Holocaust, and his story. On the other hand, Often a Minute is a poem about the injustices of the Holocaust.
What can a person do if their language is tainted with malevolent intentions towards others, how about after sixty millions of their own people are inhumanly slaughtered with little to no respect? Nothing can ease a person’s trauma and torment, attempting to explain an event of such horrific context is extremely for a survivor of said event. However, another problem arises, how one thoroughly explains an event that they desperately do not want to relive. Many Holocaust survivors, who are literary geniuses, use a variety of methods in order to express their opinions and experiences to the reader. Elie Wiesel’s use of repetition, Art Spiegelman’s use of a bizarre genre to create symbolism while explaining euphemisms, and many survivors opening up to the younger generation at Holocaust themed museums.

In the graphic novel Maus II, Art Spiegelman reveals what hardships his father had to go through to survive his time during the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel depicted what him and his father went through to withstand the suffering in the concentration camps during the holocaust in his autobiography, Night. The connection between these two works from contrasting genres is the relationships and loyalty to family and friendships shown throughout these accounts. When facing critical situations, remaining loyal to your family and friends is more essential to survival than self-preservation and resourcefulness. Having close relationships with friends and family could benefit you by granting you opportunities to receive support, resources and other components to survival.
Survivor stories have held the truth about disasters in the world better than oral storytelling can possibly achieve. The only thing readers would assume about survivor stories is the recurring idea of surviving a horrible incident. However, two particular survivor stories - Night, a memoir by Elie Wiesel about his horrid experience in the Holocaust; and Revenge of the Whale, the true story of the whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick - have more resemblances and distinctions than one could see. The straightforward system that Eliezer Wiesel from Night uses to maintain hope is inadequate to the hope-crushing techniques the crew members from Revenge of the Whale use.
Perils of Indifference delivers his message effectively, but not to the same degree of his memoir, for it isn’t able to explore these the horrors of the Holocaust, and use the same extent of literary terms because of its length
In Maus, Art Spiegelman records his personal accounts of trying to delve into his father’s traumatic past. His father, Vladek, is a Jew from Poland who survived persecution during World War II. Art wants to create a graphic novel about what his father went through during the Holocaust, so he reconnects with Vladek in order to do so. Due to the horrifying things that the Jews went through he has trouble opening up completely about all the things that happened to him. But after Art gets together with his father many times, he is finally able to understand the past legacy of the Spiegelman family.
Art Spiegelman offers a very unique point of view in his two narratives, Maus I and Maus II. In these two books, Spiegelman takes us through the life of his father Vladek and his journey during World War II in Europe. Spiegleman also confronts how post-memory has effected him through the years, even when he was growing up. These two books reflect perfectly on a survivors story using symbolism and analogy.
Although many liberals, such as Judith Jarvis Thomson, in “A Defense of Abortion” believe that fetus become humans, they believe there is a cut off line. Jones(2002), believes that because “By the tenth week(mark), for example, it already has a face, arms, and legs, fingers and toes; it has internal organs, and brain activity is detectable”(Pg.39), that ten weeks into pregnancy is cut off line. That the fetus before ten weeks is just a clump of cells without soul or life. However, according to Jane English(1975), in “Abortion and the Concept of a Person”, she states that “Animals, for example, are not persons,yet to kill or torture them for no reason at all is wrong. ”(Pg.233)
The Holocaust, death, and sexual identity are three very deep and profound subjects, and the comic medium helps bring these topics to life. No longer is the comic the silly humor on the back of your newspaper. Before comics used to be a form of cheap, low-class art. Spiegelman and Bechdel show that comics are even more complex than the most sophisticated high-class art. The graphic novel is a powerful literary weapon that helps authors explain the complicated and subtle nuances that are crucial to the greater story.
