Alexander Pearce NOT GUILTY 2. The Conditions on Sarah Island The conditions of Sarah Island were abhorrent. Prisoners like Alexander Pearce went insane and changed from who they once were. The prisoner’s rooms were shocking and dirty. The island itself was small and was surrounded by water which was surrounded by trees. The island is completely isolated and terrifying. The place was stripped of vegetation and was certainly is not a friendly place to be. The morning routine for the prisoners was tough, they had to muster up and then we were told to swim over to the boat that would take them to the Dense Forest where they would chop down the large Huon Pine. This may sound easy but it certainly wasn’t. The swimming part was horrible, the water was freezing cold also many of the prisoners could not swim and there was a high chance of drowning. For most of the prisoners they couldn’t swim and therefore many of the prisoners died in front of their friends which would have scared the friends for life. After the swimming the prisoners travelled via boat to the forest however they had to keep their wet clothes on which was very uncomfortable for them. They had to chop down the large Huon Pine trees as they were very good for boat making. The lashes that the prisoners had to take would were extremely painful. To add to the punishments on Sarah Island the prisoners also faced solitary confident where the rooms that they were in were exceptionally small. They could barely even move it was that tight. The walls were almost touching the prisoners meaning that it was a tight squeeze, not to mention that it was pitch black. Overall Sarah Island was only as a place of degradation, depravity and woe. Therefore Sarah Island was that shocking of an environment that it would make even the nicest people want to
