Worse than Slavery, by David Oshinsky, is a novel about post-Civil War America, and the life it gave free African Americans in Mississippi and other parts of the South. Oshinsky writes about the strict laws and corrupt criminal justice system blacks faced after they were freed, and while the contents of the book are not typically read about in history textbooks, it is important to understand what life was like for the freedman. Anyone interested in reading his book would profit from it. With the end of the Civil War came the destruction of the old system of slavery. Many white Southerner’s were outraged, but were forced to accept the newly freed blacks.
Between 1922 and 1924, the KKK gained over 3.8 million members. Many white Americans, especially in the South, felt threatened by African Americans. Many people were threatened so that they would join, and the KKK was often violent. This revitalized Klan is often referred to as the second wave of the Klan.5 It was established in 1915 by William J. Simmons. Simmons, a minister, claimed that he had been given a vision by God. The KKK was a white nationalized group that included former veterans, which created the first branch of the group. The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
On April 12, 1861, a brutal war broke out between the north and the south called the Civil War. Some say the north, or Union, went to war to abolish slavery, but the south, or Confederates, went to war for states’ rights. Abraham Lincoln, who was president at the time, called the nation “a house divided” because the north and south did not agree. Four long years later, the Union won the victory on May 9, 1865.
The KKK hated and mistreated all who were different from there ideals, constantly pushing there ways of thinking on others. They terrorized many groups including immigrants, blacks, Jews, Catholics, etc. The KKK terrorized many groups with intimidation, going to African american schools and setting bombs off, set churches and schools to fire, leaching their teachers. Marching through parades and rallies to prove there points. They were known to burned crosses on civilian properties and hills of neighborhoods to install fear.
The KKK used violence against Black Freedmen and others who opposed them to show dominance over them. The KKK used violence the stop Black Freedmen from voting so the Democrats could win more elections. After the Civil War the South elected ex-Confederate leaders to office. They denied freedmen the right to vote and passed “Black Codes” to restrict freedmen.
The KKK was a racist group that strongly hated blacks and anyone who helped or supported them. The KKK thought that the U.S was better off without blacks and that blacks were not equal to whites. They formed a klan that all had this belief and hung blacks, burned down schools that blacks were getting a little education in, and many other stuff to show their hate. The KKK also burned a cross to intimidate blacks and others who supported blacks. It was very hard for a black to be elected for something.
The Ku Klux Klan or KKK has created centuries of fear. They originated in Pulaski, Tennessee. The famous hate group was out to re establish white supremacy. The KKK has influenced local governments and people in power. It has also had an impact on American people and specifically black minorities.
The 1920s was the period where many drastic changes occurred in the U.S. history. During the 1920s, in different groups like Women, radicals, European immigrants, African American, or Mexican Americans, many changes raised in the United States. groups like Radicals and Immigrants were targeted in the red scare and, also new restrictions on immigration reflected prejudice among the non-Anglo-Saxon group. But I believe, Ku Klux Klan had the most significant changes affecting them from 1919-1929. The plan was organized by the white southerners for native whites.
The analysis and finding of the Ku Klux Klan is that this extremist group is also associated as a hate group as time evolved with the definition of hate groups and todays extremist Christian groups. This data and finding has been accumulated from research of the origin of the Ku Klux Klan and their extreme actions in carrying out what they believed to be the right forum of saving America from those they identified as not being of American decent. Throughout history they have intimidated those whom are not so called pure white and their belief in racial superiority over all nationalities. These accounts have been verified though quantitative research approach though out history by historians.
The Ku Klux Klan was not seen in Colorado in 1920’s but by 1925 the Klan members and sponsored candidates controlled the Colorado State House and Senate. Ultimately, Colorado lawmakers managed to prevent the Klan’s legislative agenda from passing. Ku Klux Klan dominated much of Colorado politics during the mid-1920’s. After the general election of 1924, the governor, Clarence Morley, was a Klansman, taking his orders from Dr. John Galen Locke, the Grand Dragon of the Colorado Realm [4].

Rising of the KKK was arranged due to them believing in white supremacy. They believed whites were higher than black and they were superior, due thinking that whites were closer to God. During the slavery period in American, the KKK rose. Due to threatening and frightening African Americans to stay in their place as slaves. African Americans overthrowing and becoming superior, was what the KKK feared.
