A Friend, Or A Fow? The Confusing Case of Steve Harmon. Imagine it’s the 22nd of December, a few days before Christmas, and you receive the gift of a family member, friend, or spouse being murdered. Unfortunately, this is something the Nesbitt family doesn’t have to imagine, which is completely unjust. This is the story of the death of Mr. Nesbitt and the journey to bring the perpetrators to justice, a story in the book, “Monster”, by Walter Dean Myers. The death of Alguinado Nesbitt occurred in a drugstore on 145th Street, Harmlem on December 22nd, a robbery was taking place and Mr. Nesbitt was shot, causing him to die only a few minutes later. Steve is an average 16-year-old boy who goes to high school and likes to make films. Steve shouldn’t have ever been placed on trial, but when he was, it should’ve been quick and easy, rather than long and extensive. In the trial, Steve states that he has only ever had quick conversations with the other suspects of the robbery, conversations about simple stuff like basketball, he also claims that at the time of the robbery, he wasn’t at the gas station in which the crime occurred. At a different point in the trial Steve’s film teacher, Mr. Sawicki, provides a character testimony for Steve, claiming that Steve is a good, honest young man, and that he could tell this through Steve’s films. This testimony from Steve’s teacher is trustworthy because it’s insight from a person, not related to Steve, meaning there is less chance for there to be bias, that spends a lot of time around Steve or with Steve’s work, and it being reliable provides integrity to the previous claims of Steve showing how innocent he
