The Connection Between Ideas How have ideas collectively been created and spread across the world like wildfire? The answer is urbanization. Urbanization brings people closer, who creates more opportunities and helps ideas flow from one person to another. Authors Sylvia Nasar, Matt Ridley, and John Steinbeck all express different views regarding how cities create opportunities and the invention of new ideas, but, as a result, makes it difficult for unskilled workers to find jobs, wanting a change. Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist, sides with the beneficial effects of urbanization, expressing that they are a place of opportunity. People are always searching for innovations that will make our lives easier and more efficient, but the downfall is that it takes away work that could feed and clothe a family. When landowners were losing their land in The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck passionately expresses that, "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage" (349). The inventions of new farming tools, such as a tractor, make the efficiency higher and the amount of work smaller. As a result, the loss of people's land and work waves of anger the working class men, wanting to find employment. Also, the movie [G5] [G6] [G7] Barbarians at the Gate, portrays a money savvy businessman named Ross Johnson. He attempts to purchase a multimillion dollar company, saying, “Be assured, however, that the Barbarians are out there just beyond the gate, licking their wounds, biding their time, waiting for their next chance to storm the gates.” Urbanized areas are where economic games prosper; so money-hungry men are ready to pounce on a good investment.
