In 31 B.C. off the coast of Greece, power couple Mark Antony and Cleopatra went to battle with former ally Octavian. Mark Antony was a Roman general who served under Julius Caesar and later Caesar’s successor. Cleopatra was the last Pharaoh and Queen of Egypt. Octavian was Caesars adopted son and rightful heir. Their interesting relationships led to various complications. Mark Antony was a general under service of Julius Caesar, but Caesar’s assassination spawned Mark and Cleopatra’s relationship. Cleopatra was once Caesar’s partner and just like him Mark was entranced by Cleopatra’s beauty. The Queen is the only female really remembered out of the powerful figures of this time period. Cleopatra was notorious for making men of power fall …show more content…
However, one could easily assume as to why Mark Antony went after her. There are many theories around the subject of Cleopatras sudden departure from the Battle of Actium. One popular assumption as to why both Cleopatra and Mark Antony fled the battle is because they had planned to flee all along. Maybe the couple thought they could just return and flee back to Egypt and rule together there. Another theory is that the Queen simply saw that the battle was not in their side’s favor and that they would lose no matter how hard they tried so she fled. My personal favorite theory is the weirdest, strangest, and most peculiar one of them all; the theory of the ancient Suckerfish. The myth like theory proposes that giant Suckerfish colonized and lurked in the waters where the Battle of Actium took place. Suckerfish of this size could sink boats or extremely delay their movements. Cleopatra could’ve seen or been aware that Suckerfish played in these waters and turned back to flee. A Suckerfish is scientifically called a Remora. Remora in latin mean ‘delay’. It can be assumed that Cleopatra knew this and fled. Another opinion is that the fish actually did attach to Mark Antony’s boat and slowed it down so much the battle was already lost. If they had won the Battle of Actium maybe life now would’ve been very different. The same thought can be applied to if Cleopatra and Mark Antony had survived longer than they did or even died a different …show more content…
Cleopatra went and refuged in a place she had built for herself. Around this time Mark Antony received word from a messenger that Cleopatra was dead. Because of this he stabbed himself with his own sword trying to commit suicide. Yet before he died another messenger told him that Cleopatra still lived. With this news Mark had himself carried and delivered to Cleopatra’s location. He supposedly died within his lovers arms after pleading for Cleopatra to make peace with Octavian. Cleopatra attempted to fulfill Antony’s dying wish and went and tried to seduce Octavian. He yet again did not fall for her charms. Cleopatra rather than face the consequences of living killed herself by committing suicide supposedly by having an Asp, a venomous snake and a symbol of royalty, bite her. Not only did Mark and Cleopatra die, but Cleopatra and Caesar’s son Caesarion was executed by Octavion. Octavian, now Augustus, did however adopt Cleopatra and Antony’s twins. Mark Antony and Cleopatra were buried together somewhere in Alexandria, Egypt. Because of Cleopatra’s death the entire Egyptian empire fell. The only thing that gave Egypt it’s power and strength was really their government and strong traditions. With Cleopatra’s death that all ended and she got her title of The Last Pharaoh and Queen of Egypt, Egypt then became a province of
