In today’s changing world many more Americans are starting to live with each other before marriage. Years ago no one would live together without a marriage license. When telling your old fashioned parents you are going to move in with your partner before marriage, they might not accept this idea. In the discussion of cohabitation before marriage a controversial issue is whether or not cohabitation before marriage increases divorce rates and leads to unhappy relationships. While some argue that for the most part, living together before marriage helps decrease divorce rates because this allows a couple to better get to know each other before rushing into marriage just to live together, others contend that cohabitation before marriage is the reason for increased divorce rates.
The number one reason why living together is so frowned upon in society is because many religious people view it as “living in sin” because they are going against the bible. Hebrews chapter 13 versus 4 describes the honorable state of marriage: “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.”(The Holy Bible). Having couples that aren’t married, living together is a very common step taken now days among Americans. In Fact, some couples would rather live together first and then get married. It helps them learn to live with each other and get to know one another more. Couples’ not married, living together is not a threat to the society and economy. Unmarried couples should have no pressure in making decisions towards marriage. People should only be getting married once they feel the time is right, not because of how family members or society is going to look upon
