The Crimean War was between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire consisted of Great Britain, France, and Sardinia. In 1853, Russia conquered Moldova and Wallachia, which were both Ottoman vassal states. The Ottomans retaliated by declaring war on Russia. The two powers entered three years of bloody fighting, that began when Ottoman troops landed in Crimea with the goal of capturing Sevastopol. The Russian fortress resisted the Ottoman attack until 1855. The victory of The Ottoman Empire ended the dominant role of Russia in south east Europe.
