John Proctor, a more lovable what you might call protagonist of the book who sticks his feet in the ground and dies for his name. The Proctor you know however may just be different from the real John Proctor. The 3 differences of proctor in life and proctor in the play are his descriptive appearance, his personality, and his how much the witchery affected him and his family. From small little differences to big personality changes John Proctor has it all so buckle in as I use evidence to show you the real John Proctor.
In The Crucible, John Proctor takes the role of a Colonial wheat farmer for Salem Village. He, easily comparable to every other respected American at the time, was a righteous, God-fearing man that wanted nothing, but a new start to their lives outside of the control of King William III of England and his influences. But unlike the horde, Proctor did not believe that witches had possibly squirmed their way into Salem Village. In fact, he knew that they hadn’t made their way into the Village. This was because he knew the reason that it all started, a teenage girl named, Abigail, her undying love for him and and her extreme resentment of his wife, Elizabeth Proctor.
The second important part of the quote Mr. Proctor said was “We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys to the kingdom,…” Proctor is seeing in Salem a shift in power from the adults and people with authority in the town. The authority and control was handed to the children who are going crazy convicting others who have hurt them saying they are witches. John Procter knows this because he knows Abigail’s plan. Abigail is trying to get Proctor to marry her by killing Mrs. Proctor in the witch trials.
Proctor will hang! This is what everyone was astonished about in Salem during the witch trials in Arthur Miller’s book, “The Crucible”. John Proctor decided that he wanted to prove a point to everyone about witchcraft. He did this by, not signing his name on the paper that he confessed on because he wanted to be able to keep his name. How he started to lie to the court about everything such as being a witch.
When people are accused of a crime they didn’t commit, it often has lasting effects on them and their loved ones. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, he explores the Salem Witch trials with characters that are accused of a crime they clearly didn’t commit, and are sent to their death. In a similar fashion, the five adolescents who were accused and found guilty of a heinous crime in New York City were ultimately found innocent after they served years and had eliminated a chance of restoring their youth. In the Central Park Five court case that occurred in New York City during the late 1980’s, the idea that a hero is someone valiant is proven by Antron Mccray. In the play, the Crucible by Arthur Miller, it displays that a hero is honest based on
The Accounts of John Proctor How much would you be willing to admit of one of your most remorseful secrets to save another’s life? Confessing to could help save the life of a loved one, as this is shown in the play known as The Crucible. As the plot of this tale unravels, it is revealed that John Proctor changes drastically and displays several strengths and weaknesses.
In the Crucible by Arthur Miller which protagonist is John Proctor, his desire to do what is right because of fhis reputation, his name of the town was synonymous with integrity and pride, all he wanted was respect. Notwithstanding, Elizabeth gave him his respect he deserved after his death, and Mary Tyrone, the protagonist of Long Day’s Journey into Night by Eugene O’Neill does not want people to know that she’s addicted to morphine after Edmund’s birth. She’s the main focus of the play because each act ends with her and her causes everything to happen due to the fact that she’s the only character in the play who’s looking for her motivation back that she has lost over the years before she met Tyrone. Unfortunately, she’s unable to find her
Proctor the Tragic Hero Like most good works of literature, the Crucible contains a tragic hero; the tragic hero is John Proctor. While most people think very highly of Procter, he holds a secret, a major flaw, that will lead to his death. John Proctor is considered a tragic hero because of his good reputation turing bad because of his tragic flaw, hubris; this flaw will lead to his downfall, his death. Throughout the Crucible, the townspeople of Salem think very highly of John Procter.
The Crucible “A hero is somebody who voluntarily walks into the unknown”- Tom Hanks. Hank’s quote is being expanded by the thought that there are many opportunities for a person to possess the title of being a hero without them even knowing it. There are beliefs that John Proctor was indeed a hero in Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible. The story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in the year 1692. In the community of Salem a witch hunt came about.
Your reputation is everything, or at least to John Proctor it was. You want people to look at you in the best way possible. You also want to be honest and stand up for what is right. Even if someone wants you to do the wrong thing, you should stand up for what you know is right. That is exactly what John Proctor did.
Two Heroes Through Time: Proctor, a Tragic Hero and his Comparison to Christ in The Crucible "The change in the hero's fortunes be not from misery to happiness, but on the contrary, from happiness to misery, and the cause of it must not lie in any depravity but in some great error on his part." - Aristotle Human nature has shown to be mostly ignorant but also shows prejudice to those who serve and bring benefit to society. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, John Proctor is a perfect example of a person who comes across as the proverbial Christ figure, someone with a whole lot of characteristics revealed throughout the play. Confronting the evil in Salem, overcoming temptation, but also being persecuted and suffering is what Proctor was known for. When John Proctor was accused of witchcraft in 1692, he knew that even though the accusations were false and that the women were not in contact with the devil, he had to admit to being a witch to save all those around him.
In this act of the play, an interesting element of conflict and hypocrisy between the relationships of characters and within the characters themselves. These relationships continue to make Salem appear less pure and pristine as it initially seemed to be. One example of conflict can be seen in John Proctor’s decision as to whether he would testify in court against Abigail. John, at least on the surface level, wants to protect Elizabeth from being hanged for witchcraft because Abigail had accused her. From the movie and play, I make out John to be a man with a large degree of grandeur.
In Arthur Miller’s book The Crucible, it shows John Proctor as both a romantic hero and a side of an antihero where he’s a hero in some people’s mind and he shows some insecurities because of Abigail’s affair. And most of people don’t see it until the confession. For Proctor he’s always had gone head to head with the Putnams over the land disputes, even though most people (including Mr. and Mrs. Corey) support the Proctor’s. For Proctor as a hero, he does show some bravery in the way that some people would see. For example he shows a few thing to do and even defiant to protect his own name.
When people think of the play, “The Crucible”, they usually picture the witch trials and women being hanged, but Arthur Miller depicts the witch trials in a completely new light. He shows through a story that the witch trials were much more than just people calling others witches. There was deceit, pain, greed, and more. Through the play, we follow the character, Abigail, observe her actions and their consequences. We witness the lives of people she impacts, what happens to them, and how many times she lies to get her way.
In The Crucible, the protagonist John Proctor was. In the town of Salem, in 1692, a group of young ladies by the names of Betty Williams, Abigail Williams and Tituba were found dancing in the forest naked by Reverend Parris, Abigail’s’ uncle. Reverend Parris assumed that they were participating in witchcraft. This idea of witchcraft spread through the city of Salem and the citizens began accusing each other of being witches. This started a series of court cases known as the Salem Witch Trials.
