In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller, one of the main characters, John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams. By doing so, this opens up a big conflict between his wife Elizabeth, Abigail and the Salem court. In court Abigail accused Elizabeth of attempted murder by witchcraft. Their servant Mary Warren, brought home a doll she was making in court with a needle stuck in the stomach. When Reverend Hale visits the Proctors, the town marshals arrive with a warrant for Elizabeth’s arrest.

There are beliefs that John Proctor was indeed a hero in Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible. The story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in the year 1692. In the community of Salem a witch hunt came about.
In The Crucibles written by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is a tragic hero. He’s farmer that is honest and a respectful. Proctor does something that is a sin within the puritan town. He commits adultery with his 17 year old maid named Abigail Williams. Ever since Proctor’s wife kicked Abigail out things have got worse.
In this act of the play, an interesting element of conflict and hypocrisy between the relationships of characters and within the characters themselves. These relationships continue to make Salem appear less pure and pristine as it initially seemed to be. One example of conflict can be seen in John Proctor’s decision as to whether he would testify in court against Abigail. John, at least on the surface level, wants to protect Elizabeth from being hanged for witchcraft because Abigail had accused her. From the movie and play, I make out John to be a man with a large degree of grandeur.
Abigail Williams was a troubled teen due to her parent’s death. After her parent’s death, she loo discovers them, she attempts to show her behavior because it will reveal her affair with Proctor if she confesses to casting a spell on Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail lies to hide the affair, and to prevent charges of witchcraft. Being more psychotic, she tried to kills Elizabeth to be with John. Abigail gets extremely upset when Elizabeth fired her from the Proctor home.
JOHN PROCTOR: TRAGIC HERO Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a greatly revered work, and it reflected the times of America in the days of McCarthyism. Perhaps the character that connected to the audience most was John Proctor, the protagonist of the play. He reflects the mistakes that we have made in our lives, and the struggle that some of have while trying to take the blindfold off of other people. He should be considered a hero because he feels guilt, and therefore tries to make up for the fact that he once had an affair.
Throughout the play, Elizabeth shows her love for John, in variety of ways. She tells John “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John- with a smile- only somewhat bewildered” (1295). Elizabeth lying in court is her belief to protect John as well as her pleading with him.

He shows through a story that the witch trials were much more than just people calling others witches. There was deceit, pain, greed, and more. Through the play, we follow the character, Abigail, observe her actions and their consequences. We witness the lives of people she impacts, what happens to them, and how many times she lies to get her way.
In the story of “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, several people were being accused of being witches and were put to death because of these accusations. There are a lot of different characters throughout this play, but one that I relate to the most would be, John Proctor. A few reasons why I think that he is more like me, one being that he respects women, another being that he always has people backs, and lastly Need to put third point . One of the reasons I believe John Proctor and I are the same is that he has a lot of respect for women.

John Proctor is a good man despite anything others may say about him. He displays three very noble qualities throughout the witch trials which are bravery, honesty, and an overall goal to save lives even to the point where he sacrificed his. While many argue John is a bad man because he committed adultery they are entirely mistaken. Just because he had one bad sin gives no right to anybody to call him a bad person when clearly the good side of him is shown more than the bad. John Proctor is a good man who displays the characteristics of a hero and could be seen as one for giving his life for his friends.
I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller 153). This quote truly demonstrates Proctors character as a whole, as he is willing to be hung for the sake of proving his worth to the court. Specifically, Proctor knows he is truly innocent, and wants to make the courts aware of his innocence. His unwillingness to confess to witchcraft, is because of his personal beliefs regarding reputation.
