John Proctor the Wrongly Accused In The Crucible there are many people condemned and hanged for witchcraft, one of these, John Proctor, I believe to be innocent. A man with as much integrity and honesty as John Proctor, could never perform the act of witchcraft. Undoubtedly he wasn’t a perfect man but no one ever is. As we are proved time and time again, John is an honest, hardworking man; who is haunted by his past misdeeds.
John Proctor’s character is one based on reputation, and guilt. The guilt comes from his affair with Abigail Williams. The reputation aspect comes from when he is accused by Mary Warren of trying to turn her to the Devil. I believe that John Proctor grows tired of the accusations, as to why he speaks of his false involvement with Satan in front of the town. Specifically, Deputy Danforth uses John Proctor as an example for conviction as he is certain he will be able to turn others
John Proctor from “The Crucible” is a justified and complex character. John Proctors unwavering stand against the Salem witch trails in “The Crucible” is justified due to his commitment to personal integrity, the courage to confront social justice, and the importance of individual freedom against oppressive systems. This highlights Proctor's actions as justified based on his integrity, resistance against injustice, and defense of individual freedom. John Proctor's personal integrity is evident throughout the book, as he consistently upholds his moral principles despite the consequences he may face. One example of Proctors integrity can be seen in this quote, “I am not the Devil’s advocate.”
In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller, one of the main characters, John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams. By doing so, this opens up a big conflict between his wife Elizabeth, Abigail and the Salem court. In court Abigail accused Elizabeth of attempted murder by witchcraft. Their servant Mary Warren, brought home a doll she was making in court with a needle stuck in the stomach. When Reverend Hale visits the Proctors, the town marshals arrive with a warrant for Elizabeth’s arrest.

Hank’s quote is being expanded by the thought that there are many opportunities for a person to possess the title of being a hero without them even knowing it. There are beliefs that John Proctor was indeed a hero in Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible. The story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in the year 1692. In the community of Salem a witch hunt came about.
In The Crucibles written by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is a tragic hero. He’s farmer that is honest and a respectful. Proctor does something that is a sin within the puritan town. He commits adultery with his 17 year old maid named Abigail Williams. Ever since Proctor’s wife kicked Abigail out things have got worse.
In Arthur Miller’s book The Crucible, it shows John Proctor as both a romantic hero and a side of an antihero where he’s a hero in some people’s mind and he shows some insecurities because of Abigail’s affair. And most of people don’t see it until the confession. For Proctor he’s always had gone head to head with the Putnams over the land disputes, even though most people (including Mr. and Mrs. Corey) support the Proctor’s. For Proctor as a hero, he does show some bravery in the way that some people would see. For example he shows a few thing to do and even defiant to protect his own name.

John Proctor is a very dishonest person and isn't afraid to argue with others about things even if heś completely in the wrong. The crucible by Arthur Miller really does a good job of showing proctors true colors in the play. Many of the things Proctor does is cheat on his wife multiple times with a girl that's half his age and then cuts the girl ̈Abigail ̈ off. He says that he is a very faithful man but that wouldn't make sense because he cheated on his wife and when reverend hale asked him to list all ten commandments he could only list nine and the one he forgot his wife repeated for him and it was the commandment that one shall not be an adulterer which goes against the bible. He also made it very clear that he didn't believe in witches
Tragic Heroism in The Crucible It is better to die for what you believe in rather than to lie to save your life. This is one of the largest themes in Arthur Miller’s novel The Crucible. The character of John Proctor specifically wrestles with these issues in the second half of the book, after he has been accused of witchcraft and will be sentenced to death. Although it can be argued that the character of John Proctor is a sinner and an adulterer because of his relationship with Abigail, thus he is not a hero, he is in fact a tragic hero because this relationship eventually led to his downfall. The piece of this is that Proctor acknowledges he is not a good man, but he is eventually able to find enough goodness in himself to sacrifice himself
Throughout the play, Elizabeth shows her love for John, in variety of ways. She tells John “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John- with a smile- only somewhat bewildered” (1295). Elizabeth lying in court is her belief to protect John as well as her pleading with him.

He has a round and dynamic personality as he goes through the various conflicts in the play. John Proctor’s character is interesting and complex, yet everything about his is revealed as the play progresses. In the beginning Proctor is said to have had an affair
The first impressive characteristic of John Proctor is his bravery. Speaking out against the “afflicted” girls in the way he did could cause serious question of him as a person. From the court’s standpoint John could be seen as directly opposing the court, which would have him jailed, or could even have him be accused of witchcraft. Also, he would have had to have known that Abigail Williams would have immediately accused him of being a witch once he spoke out against them. However, that did not stop him from delivering the truth to the court.
When people think of the play, “The Crucible”, they usually picture the witch trials and women being hanged, but Arthur Miller depicts the witch trials in a completely new light. He shows through a story that the witch trials were much more than just people calling others witches. There was deceit, pain, greed, and more. Through the play, we follow the character, Abigail, observe her actions and their consequences. We witness the lives of people she impacts, what happens to them, and how many times she lies to get her way.
