In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is considered an evil or decent man. John Proctor should not be considered evil but should only be looked upon as a nice and conservative man. Proctor is a man who is selfish rather than selfless and not necessarily a bad selfish either. Proctor cares about his own views and does not really care about the lives of others. This does not mean that he hates everyone else or that this makes him a bad person but people have a weird perspective of him because of the way he acts. John follows his own morals and often does not interfere with the church life, because of this, people's perspective of him again change. John is also a nice man who follows his own beliefs and shouldn't be looked at as an evil man. People tend to think Proctor is an evil man because he committed adultery and also cheated on his wife but his wife says that she thinks he is still a good man. If his wife says he's a good man then who would have the right to judge someone better than their own spouse. Someone's spouse is most likely to judge more harsh and have more of an opinion because they’re with that person everyday. In this case if John Proctors wife says he is a good man then why not take her word, she is with him almost everyday and is also married to the man. John knows this is not his wife's fault and takes complete blame for his actions. Additionally, John wants to take the blame so he can pay the consequences for his sins and not get away with a heinous sin at the time. As you can see John isn’t the bad man everyone thinks he is, he shows the characteristics of a good man by showing regret to what he has done and wants to fix the situation and recreate his name as John
