The Crucible, is an American play written by Arthur Miller in 1953. The famous play is slightly dramatized and partially fictitious story on the Salem Witch Trials that took place in Salem, New England during the sixteenth century. In the extreme of New England the appearance of frightening occurrences were often contributed to the sighting of the devil and his acquaintances. There are many characters in the play that could be argued about who could off been most responsible for the tragic ending of the play. The different characteristics and traits of Mary Warren can contribute to the tragic ending of the play. Mary Warren contributes to the tragedy of The Crucible because Mary is vulnerable towards Abigail. This is shown in the play when it says “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you”(Act 1,21). Mary Warren has several guilty consciences that lead up to being most responsible. For example when it said “I made a gift for you today, Goody Proctor. I had to sit long hours in a chair, and passed the time with sewing...Why, thank you, it’s a fair poppet”.(Act 2,59). Mary knows that Abigail made the poppet in court for vengeance against Elizabeth Proctor. In addition when it comes to find out that there is a needle inside the poppet “He draws out a long needle from the poppet - it is a needle!” (Act 2,74). This demonstrates, that Mary lacks the courage to tell Elizabeth Proctor that there is a needle inside the poppet beforehand even though she already knew it was there.
